Might EAR/ONS have normally worn glasses and switched to contacts when he prowled and attacked? Some facts which could support this theory:
This alternating between glasses and contacts could explain some aspects of EAR’s suspected behaviors and M.O.:
Three questions for this theory:
- Practical use hard contact lenses have been around since the late 1940’s.
- Soft contact lenses were introduced to the public in 1971.
- By 1977, 16 million Americans wore contact lenses.
- This advertisement from 1975 specifically touts the use of contacts for athletic activities.
- As a disguise, glasses or lack thereof can work pretty well, especially when a person does not know you and has not previously seen you with your glasses on.
- Not only do glasses block part of a person’s face, they can fundamentally change how you perceive a person.
- Example: These pictures of Andrew Cunanan. The glasses are disarming; you imagine him to be a CPA, not a murderer.
This alternating between glasses and contacts could explain some aspects of EAR’s suspected behaviors and M.O.:
- Although EAR almost always wore masks during the attacks, he often did not show much concern with otherwise being seen, though that did change later on.
- In attack # 15 he wore an open-faced mask. The victim could not provide an especially detailed description of his face, but that’s still pretty risky on EAR’s part.
- If EAR did attend the meeting where the Italian man spoke out, he might have worn his glasses and thus felt confident of not being identified or drawing suspicion.
- Some victims were shown yearbooks and mugbooks. It would make sense if they ignored the individuals wearing glasses by reflex.
- EAR/ONS seemingly had a conscious hatred of women. If he did wear glasses, he might have thought that they were responsible for his trouble with women and thus not only were contacts a practical concern, but a ritualistic one as well.
Three questions for this theory:
- Did LE ever consider this possibility?
- Did LE dismiss potential suspects and POIs solely on the basis of their use of glasses?
- Are there any known instances of serial rapists or other criminals alternating between glasses and contacts as a means of disguise or subterfuge?
