I like what everyone says. I do not want to disregard any theory, no matter how far off it may be, because no one really knows the exact answers, and a bad theory may be the correct theory. In fact, a bunch of different theories may be portions of what EAR was thinking and doing as a whole. I may be skeptical about something someone writes here, but I'll never rule it out. When I first read about few Alpha connections, I delved into it more.
For instance, I delved into the Alpha Beta gardener because the entire statement was completely off. I kept wondering why a teenager would have a gardener at her house, or why an Alpha Beta gardener would be there, or if perhaps the victim was dating a gardener who worked for Alpha Beta store, or if there was a gardening company called Alpha Beta. In trying to make sense of it, I read the results of Michelle McNamara's personal investigation and interviews. Apparently, she was on the same page as me on this subject, and she wrote that no one was ever able to identify this so-called gardener, or knew anything about him or any gardener working in that neighborhood.
Finally, I came up with this theory. It may not be right, but I strongly believe it is:
REPORT: "a few days prior to the assault, there was a gardener for an Alpha Beta market and the victim and her neighbors house."
IT POSSIBLY SHOULD HAVE READ:
A few days prior to the assault, there was a guard near (from an Alpha Beta market) the victim's and her neighbor's house.
That sounds more in line with what was observed by a witness. "guard near" not "gardener" and "from an Alpha Beta market" was most likely interjected to describe something seen by the witness to make him/her conclude the guard was "from an Alpha Beta market", and lastly, "victim's" not "victim".
An officer may have been trying to write fast in order to keep up with the statement the witness was making.
I believe this to have been the correct witness statement, and I believe the police missed a good chance to take a closer look at Alpha Beta at that time due to either a typo, or wrong wording placement in a police notebook, etc.
I have done much research on the Alpha Beta factor, and have determined there is a definite link. In particular: within large areas, EAR attacked in neighborhoods of those areas that had Alpha Betas, but neighborhoods in those same areas that had NO Alpha Betas had NO EAR attacks. And the areas struck after the EAR left the greater Sac area, he only struck TWICE. Such as San Ramon only twice, Merced only twice, Danville only twice, Walnut Creek only twice, San Jose only twice, Concord only twice, etc. The customer's who shopped at the Alphas in those neighborhoods who paid with checks....well, the face of their checks had their names, addresses and current phone numbers (2 IDs and a major credit card were required for payments by check). All these Alpha stores had one thing in common: they belonged to the same district of the Northern Region of Alpha Beta-Scaggs Stores. And almost all Alpha Beta Store district managers in the 70s and 80s were men, who all started off as part-time cashiers/clerks. And, the district managers spent 35-40 days a week (found this info in a lawsuit between Alpha and the union) driving around alone, all day long in a company vehicle, going from store to store, checking on operations and collecting all the receipts..... receipts which included the checks containing names, current addresses and work and home phone numbers.
I am still researching. You should read some of my posts about Alpha. At this time, I am trying to find out who else had access to those checks. Cashier did, but they may not have had the means or the freedom to drive around observing areas far from away from each other. The district manager already had to go to those places. Perhaps the EAR was calling lots of shoppers from the phone numbers he had in his possession. LE couldn't figure out how the EAR knew where this one babysitter would be and the phone number of those places when she was babysitting. Perhaps the EAR was calling so many homes, and the babysitter just happened to be at some of them when he called.
Do guards handle the store's checks? I don't know. However, the FBI profile did say that the suspect would blend in the neighborhoods he attacked, he would be intelligent, he would have some means of income, he would drive a well-maintained vehicle, the people who knew him would not think he could be capable of such crimes, etc..... So far, an Alpha Beta district manager has those features.
