As we all have known there are theories as to how EAR avoided detection from all the extra LE patrol vehicles both marked and unmarked. The hiding out in vacant or for sale homes until the daylight hours is most likely but I got to thinking of other things I have seen other offenders do to avoid being caught in a particular area of a crime they had committed. May 28, 1977, 4th Park Way or better known as the South Sac attack after a neighborhood canvas a witness described a white station wagon parked on Sky Parkway and it appeared as if a person may have been living inside of it. This had me thinking more that EAR could have used a parked vehicle either with the correct plate for the vehicle or better yet a plate from a scraped vehicle so it would not be traced and simplify hidden inside of it possibility in the trunk of the vehicle or among items inside of in the passenger compartment. If LE were driving the area they would spotlight the interior of the vehicle looking for a man and if nothing was visible they would move on and even if they became more curious and stopped to examine the vehicle more carefully if he was hidden in the trunk he would not be discovered and they would move on. Even if the plate was run there would be no tie into EAR. There would be no probable cause to search the vehicle and finding it empty LE would move on looking for a suspect. It would be a good emergency hiding zone and he would just have to wait it out until he could move from the area later in the day. We know how many hours he laid in the backyards of victims and prowled sleeping in a trunk of a car would be a breeze for him.
Even if the car trunk was only used in a couple of attacks it would explain the quick exits. As he discovered LE began using dogs all he would have to do is get into his escape vehicle and drive away to a few blocks away exit the car and enter the trunk for a safe hiding spot until LE called off the search. It is a case of hiding in plain sight as I believe he does to this day. It is a simple way to evade capture. I still believe he had the vacant homes for most of the attacks that were outside of his primary comfort zone. The car might have been just another piece of the total plan in his attempt to provide himself with the perfect planned assault. He may have even parked more than one car in each cluster providing many possible escape routes if he needed them in an emergency.
