The year of 2017 is coming to an end and though the case of the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker still remains unsolved, there was progress made throughout the year. I'd like to do a brief overview of those events.
There was more mainstream coverage of the perpetrator than there has been in a very long time. In 2016, law enforcement and the FBI Task Force held a press conference on the 40th anniversary of the East Area Rapist that generated more awareness for those who were oblivious to the crimes committed by the criminal. Subsequently, the television show "Crime Watch Daily" had a segment on the perpetrator detailing the crimes later that year in October of 2016. Additionally, the passing of Michelle McNamara on April 21, 2016, took the world by storm. It was sudden and unexpected. She was married to Patton Oswalt, an actor, and comedian. Prior to her death, she was investigating and writing a book (I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer) on the East Area Rapist. Her husband ended up finishing the book to honor her memory and hard work. Moreover, though her passing was a tragedy, a blessing was able to come from that; more televised shows paid respect to Michelle McNamara by not only advertising her upcoming book releasing in February of 2018 but celebrated her dedication to trying to solve the case.

* On the Case With Paula Zahn had an hour length airing on June 11, 2017, on ID (Investigation Discovery). * On September 19, 2017, Kat Winters, a well-respected researcher and prominent member on the ProBoards and the EAR/ONS subreddit, released her book titled, "Case Files of the East Area Rapist / Golden State Killer." At the moment, it's the most detailed, concise, and strictly factual books published on the case. It has dispelled rumors, misconceptions, and is completely unbiased. Moreover, the book provided new evidence and details that weren't known beforehand, such as new phone calls that were made by the suspect in 1982 and 2001. * On Monday, November 6, 2017, one of the largest news publications in magazine form, People Magazine had a lengthy piece detailing the events, along with also an airing on television. Likewise, "new" evidence on the case was represented. While it's not entirely new in the grand scheme of things, the recreational drawings of items the East Area Rapist had stolen, particularly the Chinaware dishes from attack thirty-seven, was a fantastic addition to the evidence for the public to look over.

* On December 12, 2017, "Crime Watch Daily" presented another new segment on the criminal. This televised program featured the new evidence and details from Kat Winters' book, ultimately creating more public awareness with the latest facts which can be extremely beneficial. Overall, 2017 was a great year for knowledge being spread in the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker case. Many members, particularly on the EAR/ONS subreddit, joined the discussion because of the latest television shows. 2018 is only going to provide more public awareness when Michelle McNamara's new book on the case will be released in February of 2018 and a five-part series of the case broadcasting on CNN (developed by HLN) will be aired in the first quarter of 2018. Great strides have been made in this case. Though it's coming late, it's still better than never happening. Let's not give up the fight. The case of the East Area Rapist and Original Night Stalker has the potential to be solved.
