Things do seem to be moving along: more information is being released and many new poi’s have been developed and referred to LE. The problem is that most of this is coming out of Sacramento.
No doubt EAR lived in the greater Sacramento area 1976-78 and many of his early mistakes were made there. Unfortunately, most of the evidence obtained during the investigation of those crimes has been destroyed and we have no evidence that he has been there since 1978.
Some who have followed this investigation tend to dismiss Orange country as the just the most distant cluster of crimes that he established as he ventured further from his original comfort zone. This is consistent with the principles of geographic profiling where the perp will seek new areas to operate in so that LE will not recognize a pattern and be able to link the crimes and anticipate where will strike next.
True, by taking his act to Orange County he did avoid having his crimes linked to earlier ones (until DNA became available) but it was hardly necessary to go so far. Orange County is almost 500 miles from Sacramento and 200 miles from Santa Barbara. The distance is compounded by the problem of LA traffic. If he went once, for whatever reason, and pulled off the Harrington attack, he would see that Southern Orange County was difficult to get too from north of LA and the development patterns and style of neighborhoods did not favor his method of prowling and selecting targets. Homes are close together, backyards are small and there is little undeveloped areas to utilize as escape routes.
I suspect he selected Patrice Harrington as a target in spite of the lack of advantages the location of their house offered. The locations of the other two Orange County attacks offered marginal tactical advantages but were hardly optimal compared to those targets he found in Goleta and Contra Costa County. There seems to be no reason for him to travel that far just to do those attacks. There would have been plenty of more favorable areas further north.
There primary reason anyone went to Southern Orange County in the early 80’s was jobs. The region, centered in Irvine, was booming at that time. Lots of new businesses were setting up shop and lots of new housing was going in to accommodate the new workers. I think it is most likely EAR/ONS went there for employment and adapted his “ hobby” to the limitations the area presented.
It has been suggested that he may have been there as part of a crew working on a contract in the construction or other industry.
This may have been the case with Goleta but it unlikely a Northern California based company would have bid on a job that far away that would have put them in competition with Los Angeles based companies. The LA-Orange County Metro Area is huge.
I suspect that the reason he struck in Irvine in 1981 and 1986 was that he was living there all along. As Orange County has had a thriving economy with a relatively low unemployment and high wages, there is an excellent chance he lived there for years and he may still be there.
I think the sort of public information campaign that is being focused in the Sacramento area needs to be focused on Orange County as well. Of course, anyone with links to both areas at the appropriate time would be of particular interest.
