As a newcomer to this forum, I have searched topic history prior to making this post to no avail, so apologies if I missed something, and this subject is beating a dead horse. The real estate connection angle has been analyzed at depth - and rightfully so. I'm curious if anyone has ever looked into EAR or ONS (or EARONS) as having a connection to trucking or moving companies. It seems a high percentage of victims were either living in their homes for only a few days or weeks, or were in the process of moving out of their residences. A job in trucking/moving would certainly afford one the freedom to move around the state without suspicion as part of the job, especially if it was a sole proprietor type of business without bosses...employees, etc. I can imagine a mover would field many requests for quotes/estimates from folks looking to move, or perhaps even have partnerships with realtors who would send over business at reduced rates. This would give the moving company visibility into recent address changes, newer neighborhoods with frequent moving activity, or perhaps sold-to-the-trade-only lists of families on the move (if such a thing exists). This would allow EAR, ONS, or EARONS to either target specific people, or ample time to investigate neighborhoods within which he had jobs for vulnerable peripheral victims. Furthermore, I imagine if the perp was relatively young and unmarried he could be away for many days without being missed, especially (as eluded to above) if he owned his own truck. Truck stops and campgrounds would provide temporary rest stops without raising suspicions.
Full disclosure, I cherry-picked all of the following from Winters' wonderful website.
Attacks where a recent or upcoming move was potentially a factor :
attack 7: The victim's house had just been sold by TRW Real Estate Company
attack 12: The home was for sale at the time, by JB&H Realty.
attack 19: The man had only lived there ten days and was still moving in.
attack 20: The victims had lived at their current address for approximately three months at the time of the attack.
attack 21 HAP: A house near the victim's was for sale by JB&H Realtors
attack 22: The victims had only lived on 4th Parkway for three weeks before the attack
attack 26: Victims lived in their home for only two weeks prior to the attack
attack 34: The couple had only been there for a couple of months, having moved there in April. The other houses in the area were recently constructed or were still under construction
attack 38: They had only been in their home for two months when the assault occurred.
attack 39: "Ian and Sunny Walther" worked in Hayward, Alameda County, and were in the process of moving out of their rented home on Montclaire Place with their young son.
attack 42: She'd been living alone at her boyfriend's house, who had moved out a month ago. The house was for sale. (HAP: It had been for sale for two months)
attack 43: They'd been living there for 2 months.
attack 44: They were only living in the house until they could sell it
ONS #7: At the time of her death, the house was listed for sale by Century 21
In my spiral down the timesuck that is this crazy case, I did my fair share of research and noodling online after thinking about a potential moving/trucking angle. I came across a man who was a student at Rancho High, class of 1975. He would have been 19 years 6 months old at the time of the first EAR attack. This person's childhood home was in the same neighborhood as the early Rancho attacks. His yearbook photo strongly resembles the composites with longer hair shown by the FBI in recent years. His picture is featured in the 1974 (his junior year) yearbook, but is absent for his senior year, although his address did not change during this time - as far as I can tell. This omission could be benign and have a million reasons, but could also indicate he dropped out of school his senior year, got expelled etc. His father owned an LLC trucking company started in 1974. Business address is same as childhood home. This indicates to me that he probably merely owned his own truck as this was not an affluent neighborhood. I imagine if one's father is away for long stretches on truck hauls, it would afford a teenager with the perfect family setup to easily sneak out late at night to hone one's prowling skill set.
I can see this person working with his father in the family business right out of high school, riding along for deliveries and moves, learning the trade. This would coincide with attacks starting to move further away from Sacramento. In 1979, this gentleman breaks from his father's trucking to start his own trucking LLC.....as a 22 year old bachelor...as the attacks inch further and further away from Sacramento. This person finally gets married (to a 17 year old) in 1982, providing him from 1979 to 1982 carte blanche to roam all of California without anyone to answer to. So he gets married in early 1982 (most likely with courtship in 1981) and the couple has their first child in.....you guessed it, 1986.
This person never moved away from within a 100 mile radius of Sacramento.
I'm sure he is a squeaky clean, wonderful gentleman in reality, and he has no criminal record that I can see...merely making a connection. What does the forum think about a trucking/moving connection?
Sorry for the William Faulkner novel. I'll hang up and listen.
