In Michelle McNamara's book she writes that when the supposed Visalia Ransacker was chased down by McGowen she claims the the suspect had his back to the detective. The man raised his right hand in surrender but then wheeled clock-wise, drew a gun from his left pocket and fired with enough accuracy to hit McGowen's flashlight (sorry if this is common knowledge, the shot being left-handed was new to me). However, many if not most of his victims reported that upon waking them he had a flashlight in his left hand and a gun in his right. One would naturally hold their weapon in the dominant hand.
So my question; if the ransacker and EARS are the same man, how was he able to shoot with his non-dominant left hand with any kind of accuracy? I understand he was going for the center mass (as he had been trained?) but you have to admit it's a pretty spot-on shot. He could have been ambidextrous(?) or he could have been trained. Where would you acquire such training? I can only think of special forces. I believe it's ridiculous to image EARS as some sex-offending Rambo. But has anybody else ever wondered about this?
Also, McGowen had "the drop" on him. Most guys in that situation would be running over excuses in their mind while wetting their pants. But not our boy. He remains cool, collected, and attacks with an accurate shot. It takes a certain kind of person to be chill in that circumstance. Was he trained to be cool under stress, attack rather than surrender, to recon in the night, to patiently watch and listen, to evade capture, to shoot with both hands, to creep on roofs to avoid being spotted, to never being deterred by dogs, etc...?
