Sheriff John W. Carpenter, Sheriff of Santa Barbara from 1971 to 1990. He lived at 5347 University Drive. Just look that up on google maps. Eva Taylor was murdered April 18, 1974, right behind him. She lived at 5328 Parejo. The youth that jumped over her fence landed about 3 or 4 houses from Sheriff Carpenter's house.
Was the EAR/GSK that blond man who was following the couple right past his house on University to Berkeley and then on to kill Cheri Domingo and Greg Sanchez? Was he choosing that neighborhood because the sheriff lived right there?
I'm remembering Shelby's account of the EAR hanging down from his roof looking into the bedroom of his son.
Sheriff Carpenter was much loved and I'm not saying anything against him at all. I just wonder if the EAR knew where he lived and was this was another taunt to LE? or a personal vendetta of some sort?
There are those in LE that believe Eva Taylor was an early victim -- a sleeping woman, bludgeoned to death in her own bed, nothing of value taken but a costume jewelry locket and a low value wedding ring set but leaving behind a very expensive diamond ring.
The problem Santa Barbara Sheriffs have with believing she was his victim is that they believe in the progression of violence theory. Others do not hold to that theory and say sometimes a youthful offender will kill his first victim and then not kill again for years.
I believe that the EAR/GSK did not want to kill in his home town of Sacramento or too close to his hometown, so when he came back down again to Goleta, he felt free to kill, something he had wanted to do before but only resorted to if someone was chasing him. This might explain the progression of violence theory. He may have felt So. California was far enough away to resume what he started in 1974.
But back to Sheriff Carpenter, could there be any connection? Did the sheriff put his dad in jail? fire his dad? Was he a relative? How did he know where Sheriff Carpenter lived?
I wonder if there could be anything to this, any clue to be gained.
