There are other problems with the theory as well.  If he "camped" inside a residence, the theory doesn't explain how he managed to not arouse suspicion among neighbors.  Nor does the theory explain how the guy managed to evade LE over a span of so many crimes. 

Red, you're right.  All the theory does is conflate all the burglaries, prowling, lurking into one great big clump of crimes, and neatly defines that clump as being the work of the EAR.  Where is the evidence that any of these incidents have anything to do with the EAR, specifically?

I'm with Morph on this one. I know there were lots of bad people in the areas where EAR struck but it would be a massive coincidence if there were other prowlers hitting EXACTLY the same small area around a house EAR would hit a few days later. If someone saw more than one person, it was an accomplice.

Also, he was arousing suspicion among neighbors because they were reporting the burglaries, prowling, prank calls lurking etc. They just didn't realize he was camping among them prior to the attack.

It was clear to me right from the moment I read a couple of books on the case that EAR didn't have a job. Impossible with the amount of time he dedicated to his lifestyle. As someone else mentioned above, he's "off the grid". I firmly believe he would have been caught by now if he was on it. Instead of going over the same possibilities which have failed for over 40 years (which school did he go to? was he in the army? did he work in construction? was he involved in auto wrecking?), we all need to start thinking how to answer to the one question that will help us identify him.

How do you locate somebody that has never been on the grid?

Drug dealer is my take. I think it's by far the most logical explanation. Easy money, lots of free time, no compelling schedules.

According to this list, he really needed money only between jun 78 and apr 79, after switching to Modesto.
Before and after, it's quite clear he had another source of income.

I agree with the fact that his main occupation was prowling, and that he couldn't endure the strain if he had a real job; but at the same time, he didn't seem to live on the burglaries. So, wealthy family? Possible, but personally I find difficult to match this with his very low-level activities. Seasonal job? Maybe, but still would be quite an obstacle for his lifestyle. Prostitution? ...not. Receiving stolen goods? He would have stolen more. Drug dealing? To me makes perfect sense. Unless I'm missing something.

Prowling, rape and inflicting fear in others was not just his full time occupation, it was his passion. You cannot be as devoted and efficient as he was unless you have a passion for what you are doing. I believe he did work, maybe part time, maybe in construction where he worked for periods and then had a lot of down time. My understanding is that in the 70's there was a decent amount of construction going on in CA (please correct me if I am wrong). However, I believe he only worked to pay bills and possibly because it helped him gain information which would better allow him to do what he really enjoyed. So in essence, his "job" was actually an offshoot of this real job (passion).

"Off the grid" denotes being off the radar screen of LE. I think he was a very young guy in the area---too young for LE to even look at him as a suspect, even now. But let's not forget: the youngest convicted rapist was 12 years of age.

Not "defining" off the grid, I was merely noting that "off the grid" has some similarity to "off LE's radar". I know what you mean by "off the grid" I think. You mean a guy that doesn't pay electric bills, rent, etc. so is hard to track. But a very young offender would share the same characteristics.

When you say "recent findings" indicate an older offender, that's possible. But the bottom line is nobody knows how old the EAR was. A very young offender would have fallen through the cracks of investigations. Worth taking a look at the possibilities once regarded as "too young".

I could see this guy being on some sort of disability, maybe one of those types that had an issue that wasn't really effected by it but still qualified for disability. If he had a job, it was likely part time, seasonal, or he took work when and if he needed extra $ The 9pm to 6am stalking/prowling/attacking just makes a full time 9-5 job out of the question to me. That, or he really does come from the 'well to do' or 'wealthy' family where he doesn't need money. His activities were his full time job!

All good thoughts. If full-time, he could work 4-10’s—especially if the schedule (days) varied from week-to-week—and it would be difficult for a pattern to emerge. We all find time to do the things we love.

What material were those wedding (and other personal) rings usually? It is thought he took those types of rings (with engravements and so on) because they had some personal significance to the victims. But if a ring is to have some personal significance, doesn't the material (of which it is made) usually reflect that? If it's a wedding ring, or any other type of a ring of symbolic significance, I'd guess there's a good chance that the material is more expensive too. Golden (but engraved) rings can be melted etc.

I don't know... the only thing that's striking is that in that period he took big amounts of cash, 3100 dollars in just two attacks, that's 11,400 dollars today. Of course he took valuables and electronics before and after, goods that could earn him some money of course, if he didn't save them for himself as "souvenirs". But we don't know (me, at least) which were the prices in the black market, how much money were "4,000 $ of jewellery" worth, or a golden wedding ring. Instead, the cash has a known value, and this was the only period/couple of times he stole so much.

I agree that he probably didn't have a real job during the EAR phase, but I don't think its impossible for him to have had a job. Thomas McCarthy from Ohio stalked over 2000 women while working as firefighter and having a side business. The odd hours allowed him to stalk at different hours of the day, though he did spend pretty much every second he wasn't working or sleeping stalking.

I like the part time construction work idea. Because most businesses are 9-5ish, a lot of construction can be slated for after hours work, especially if it is located at a distance from residences and won't create too much noise and generate a noise complaint- many painters paint at night, sometimes floor layers complete a floor at night or early a.m., so other construction teams can come in and do their work during the day (the plumber, the electrician). Truck drivers often work by night, so do pressmen at papers everywhere. Maybe he had a paper route in the a.m. and went to school at American River College, say, lived at home until his early 20s. The main suspect for the Zodiac murders (who may or may not have been eliminated based on DNA... unless he had his friend lick stamps for him, which is possible) was OVER 30 years old living at his Grandmother's home in Vallejo in a rear unit attached to the home....

EAR had significant independent support from one or both of two sources: 1. Social Security Disability (DIB) and 2. family subsidized employment. I came to believe this after reading of his known interactive behavior and extensive prowling. His excellent diction argues for a family background with some affluence. And some educational attainment in the family. Probable fields of family status are medical or development/real estate/construction.

EAR was the highly disordered weak link in the family. His personality disorders made any personal/family relationship tumultuous and unstable. Sometimes he could live with relatives, sometimes not. 

I suggested to the FBI that they partner with SSA and scour the MBR/SSR data base for males of the appropriate age range and DIGs (diagnostic codes) who were in pay in 1973-80 and whose address changes (c/o/a) matched EAR's movements. (No direct deposit then-if you wanted your check you gave us a physical address.) I would also run that population looking for guys with identified medical/construction field wages. You would wind up with a small group of  people to review in detail.

Unfortunately, EAR's disorders may have eventuated in a rep payee, so the c/o/a angle will not work. But that in itself would be such a small population (males in the age range, appropriate DIGS and a payee) that you could examine that whole group.

So anyway, heres my forecast-when EAR is found he will have a very fat DIB folder with a long history unstable history of hospitalizations interspersed with work issue investigations triggered by the substantial wages paid by one or more family related employers. On investigation, said wages were written off by SSA as "subsidized employment" (no show, no-go jobs) and his DIB continued year after year instead of being terminated.

Because of a glitch in the law, EAR and others on benefits saw their checks increase substantially more than intended year by year though the 1970s. (A flaw terminated prospectively only by the 1977 amendments.) EAR, as a person with substantial wage postings would have also seen large benefit recomputations each year and large COLAs on top of the recomps.  By 1979-80 he was rolling in the dough. And it did not matter if his family subsidized him or not. So unless a relative were his payee, he had no constraints on his behavior. (And if say uncle Ralph or mom was his payee, he could easily request a payee change to some subservient persona.)

So how is it  one as grandiose as EAR applies for DIB? He really didn't. During one of his hospitalizations he got swept up in the agency's outreach efforts and the claim started that way. Once on, well who is going to voluntarily end it?

If alive (likely) he may be 66 or older and converted from DIB to retirement. And his fat DIB folder will be slated for destruction soon. But he may be under 66 so the paper records still survive. Either way, his MBR exists with name address phone number etc. etc. etc.

So they are my thoughts...
