The more I read about the Pantless Cat Wrangler - the guy questioned by police the morning after the 6-2-79 attack, the guy with no pants who told cops he was looking for his cat - the more I believe that he really could have been EAR. AT the very least it just seems bizarre that nothing ever came of this lead and nothing more seems to be known about it.
What I'm wondering is: did the information about this come from police files? Did LE take the man's name during their interview of him? If they did, is his name located in the files? If they have his name and other relevant info, has anyone in LE bothered to check up on him?
Since we don't know his name, but we know about the incident itself, that implies that stories surrounding EAR made their way from police reports to retired cops to the realm of the civilian - i.e. books and articles and public statements written about EAR. It seems strange to me that this one anecdote about the case has trickled down this far, adding to the lore around EAR, but that no one from LE was able to retain the name of this man. Did that info just disappear once Sac destroyed their evidence? There just seems to be some kind of odd disconnect here - how is it possible that we know about the incident but we don't know the man's name; and furthermore, how is it possible that such a good lead was never followed up on? If LE DOES still have this man's info, and he's been cleared, what was it that cleared him? How come we only know the tantalizing and frustrating parts of this story?
LE insiders on this board: what do you know about any possible ID of this man: his name, any further criminal record, etc.? Is he still alive? Do we really not know ANYTHING else about this man? What possible clues could be used to find out his identity?
Did he ever find his cat?
I can't believe that LE interviewed a man with no pants on immediately after one of EAR's attacks and just let him go without doing any follow up. I know others have complained about shoddy police work but I just get angry when I read about the Pantless Cat Wrangler of 1979. There has to be some way of finding out who this man was.
