For many reasons I think there is a possibility he had a religious affiliation of some sort that he used as a cover for his reconnaissance during the day. I also think he had a military background as well. Whatever the case, his appearance in the neighborhoods he stalked didn’t raise any suspicions. He would have been well-groomed since he was in nice neighborhoods, and of course, what comes to mind are Mormons/LDS missionaries.
One question lots of people have is why did he have a 5-year gap? Well, if he was off in other countries doing missionary work, the minimum commitment is for two years, and you can stay on longer if you want. I can see him planning to go to another country and continuing his killing/rapes, then coming back home during 1985 for a visit to family and killing Janelle. What I gather from all the TV shows/podcasts is that she seems to have been selected spontaneously, not stalked for months prior. One thing is for sure, and that is someone like him cannot just quit. I don’t believe he took a break, I think he moved out of the country.
I’m not an expert at all about Mormonism, but what I do know is that back then, most men were expected to go on a missionary trip before their mid 20s. They had to pay for it themselves, or get support from others. So, often they would start saving money in their childhood. They were also left to their own devices without supervision. Hence, I see meaning in the line “That will pay for my planned exile.”
When you read the “Excitements Crave” letter, I can see so many innuendos to a religious mindset. You have the words “exile, values, character, decorum, what’s right, tempts” for example. If seen through a Mormon or other religious missionary group, this “poem” has meaning. Going on a mission was a right of passage for “facing maturity.” You can see in the poem a tension between someone who was raised in a religious background and “prevailing society and social norms,” between temptations and “choosing values.” This tension in his psyche between his sexual desires and religious upbringing could produce in a person with psychopathic tendencies a deep hatred for women, as being the source of his own evil inclinations and he needed to destroy them in order to destroy within himself this sexual tension he saw, as in the line, “choosing values becomes a task.” Women would be seen as evil seductresses, and when he saw them having sex with their partners, they needed to be killed.
Any thoughts on this idea?
