Let's talk about the phone calls.
Preceding many of the attacks hang-up phone calls occurred. But there were particular places they did not occur.
Here is a quick rundown of attack areas that did receive phone calls leading up to an attack, grouped by area code at the time of the attack.
916 Area Code
Rancho Cordova Y
Citrus Y
Carmichael Y
Orangevale Y
College Greens Y
Whitney Woods Y
Foothill Farms Y
Attack 43 Rancho Y
209 Area Code
Stockton Y
Modesto Y
530 Area Code
Davis N
408 Area Code
San Jose N
415 Area Code
San Ramon N
Fremont N
Danville Y
Concord Y
Walnut Creek Y
As you can see Sacramento has its own area code and all of the attack areas experienced phone calls prior to an attack. Curiously, one of the later attacks in Davis, which is only 25 miles from Sacramento did not receive phone calls, but it could be an outlier.
If we look at the bay area attacks. Concord, Walnut Creek and Danville all received calls. San Ramon, Fremont and San Jose did not.
I think the main agreed upon hypothesis is that EAR used payphones near his victims to call them. Likely to determine the household routine so that he could pinpoint the best time to attack. Did he not bother doing this for the attacks in Davis, San Ramon, Fremont and San Jose?
I think its possible that he wasn't calling from a payphone at all, and he was actually calling from his own residence. But was smart enough to know that if he called long distance there would be a paper trail linking the calls back to him. To my knowledge none of the calls were ever identified as long distance phone calls. Even the ones post-attack and in 2001. This would explain why there were no calls before or after to the Davis victims.
I don't know this for sure, because I can't find anything on the internet to indicate it, but I would bet that Danville, Concord and Walnut Creek were not considered long distance from one another, while San Ramon, Fremont and San Jose were considered long distance from at least one(specifically one would be fantastic) of the first three. Does anyone have that information?
