Hello everyone,
I'm a longtime reader of this forum, and this is my first post as a newly registered member. I have known about this case for many years -- since the Cold Case Files episode. Hearing that phone call recording for the first time is unbelievable -- like you can't believe that it is actually real, and not just from a movie. It is something that makes quite an impression. So, I have been interested in the case ever since. I know a lot about this case, but do admit that I have nothing on the experts from this forum. I have read Mr. Crompton's book, and just recently finished MM's book. I have also watched all the videos I could find on the case as well.
One thing that recently came to my mind were the multiple instances in which victims and/or witnesses discussed the perp sometimes wearing "jogging" clothing. What most stands out to me were the"jogging shorts" -- the certain style that serious runners wear -- that he was said to have been wearing in at least one of the attacks. I know another witness even mentioned jogging-type clothing. In addition, I find the running shoes that he was so accustomed to wearing -- as evidenced often times by various shoe imprints left behind -- to be noteworthy. While I know he wore boots, too, I just find it interesting that when not wearing boots he seemed to prefer running styles -- as opposed to tennis shoes or basketball shoes (i.e. Chuck Taylors), or other casual types of shoes... I think that the shoes and various clothing suggest someone involved in the sport.
Also, there were many instances in which joggers were seen in the vicinity of attacks.
In addition, it has been noted that the levee trail area was a hotspot for joggers.
While thinking about all of this recently, I have come to suspect that this perp may very well have been an active member in the running community of Sacramento -- or areas related to the crimes. In addition, this guy could very well be someone who STILL takes part in the sport -- as serious runners often do make running a lifetime activity. This would include possible running clubs, or just someone who competed in events on a somewhat regular basis. I know it was theorized that he may have been on the track or cross country teams in high school. With his noted athleticism, he could likely have been a pretty strong runner who possibly found some level of success in the sport. Often times, successful runners in HS continue on to run in their adult lives -- and often still compete in local races for the fun of it.
As an active runner myself, I often run in local road races in my town -- and have been doing so for many years. If you knew my name, you could find race results of mine that include my age, gender, hometown, etc.... While looking up race results of races I've competed in, I often recognize many of the same names that show up over the different years. In these races, there are many men in their 60's and/or 70's who still compete.
From what I gather, my suspicion for this running angle for EAR has been personally bolstered by the body description of EAR at the time. In fact, one of the sketches of the perp's body looks very much like someone who runs a good deal. Not to mention, the dude was supposedly very athletic, and if he was a competitive runner, he may have been a somewhat successful one. I think it's possible that he first got the itch to do what he did while out on early-morning or late-night run.
I also recently saw a thread on here recently where a victim claimed to have seen him again in the 90's, and she mentioned that he had a body shape that was very much in shape. As we age, most of us know that even the skinny people will begin adding some fat. This woman claimed that the man was extremely lean.
Could this guy be a longtime runner that is known in the Sacramento area -- at least to the running community? If not still running, could he have been a successful runner back in those days when the EAR was striking?
Just a thought to throw out there.
Great to have joined this forum.
