In light of the fact that this guy is not speaking and in looking at the timeline, two specific incidents jump out as "escalation" points.

1.) It seems that Bonnie dumps him around the time the VR activity begins

2.) He gets fired in Auburn immediately before the killings in So Cal begin (this one is literally indisputable).

I have read that folks are looking to compare this guy to someone and BTK has been mentioned. The big difference is that JDD seems to be unable to handle rejection/setbacks in life and needs to extract some type of revenge. Dennis Radar stated that he had a monster inside (and he said serial killers do), that everyone else could not understand. I don't think JJD was motivated by urges, I think he was motivated by anger. He felt the world had it out for him, and he was going to get even. It comes thru in the EAR attacks. When the paper says he hasn't done X, he does X. He is angry and insulted. When challenged by someone at a town hall meeting , he goes after that person. I don't know what psychologists call it, but when he felt wronged or challenged, he had to act upon it. I don't think he heard voices, I don't think he had a demon inside. He knew what he was doing. He was protecting his honor and getting even with the rest of the world. I would venture to say that if you looked at this guy the wrong way, you were on his list. An abnormal sense of "machismo". Being a cop just escalated his rationale that he could do whatever he wanted. Instead of getting even with Bonnie, he robbed and raped innocent women.  Instead of fighting for his job in Auburn (which I am 100% he could have saved based on an isolated shop lifting charge), he was so INSULTED and EMBARASSED , he didn't even fight it. He merely said to himself, I'll get even (by killing innocent people).

It seems his first child was born in 1981 , shortly after the last murder in So Cal (with the exception of Janelle Cruz). Maybe this softened him ? Maybe he felt he was done in 1981 and had gotten even. Maybe Greg injured him ? I cannot come up with a reason for killing Janelle 5 years later. I am not sure what triggered this ?

I'm guessing he would not have necessarily exhibited his instinct for rage in his professional life, but would most definitely have in his personal like. I would not be surprised to find out that Bonnie dumped him because of his temper. Remains to be seen.

it appears the trigger was the birth of his other child. She was born in 86.

I need to think about this some more but I'm starting to believe the trigger for his killings is the fact that he could no longer be a cop. So he has atendency to up the ante when there is personal trauma. It's like he closes chapters and starts new one. I think he loved being a cop and his killings are in relation to him needing to change his m.o. and sort of a fu to the police.

Your mention of Ted Bundy reminded me of an incident that apparently happened when Bundy was three: His aunt had gone to take a nap, and when she woke up, she found herself surrounded by knives on the bed, with Ted standing there looking at her...   I only mention that because I would really be interested in hearing the details of JJD's life from birth to five years old or so...

JJD was a sadistic serial offender. But he did not start out as a murderer so I'm not sure he fits into the mold of the average serial killer. Serial killers usually exhibit two or all of these characteristics as kids: bedwetting, playing with fire, torturing small animals.

Seems like he had already killed at least three times by the time he got sacked though.

Dennis Rader was motivated by wanting to feel important AND needing everyone else to know how important he was too. He was rejected professionally when he couldn't become a police officer. Had he been able to do so, he probably would've been a cop who shoots people for minor crimes before/while they are in custody.

I feel like JJD was emasculated. He may have been a "mama's boy" and infantilized by her. What if he and Bonnie ended their enagement because she cheated on him and found someone else? Emasculated. Getting caught shoplifting and being tied to a chair? Emasculation. Losing his job as a policeman.

Everytime a victim got away from him, he came back angrier and more violent the next time.

I also have a feeling that his wife was abusive towards him, even if just questioning his manhood.

Seems like he had already killed at least three times by the time he got sacked though.

Those were not planned. He abandoned a rape when he realized he had the wrong person. That says a lot about him.

Maybe as a lawyer, his wife was married to her job first and foremost, and was happy to work on their anniversary.

Or maybe DeAngelo used such occasions as an excuse to engineer an argument and storm out for the night.

Or the reverse causality: he becomes more angry and chaotic which results in the break-up, and during the same time he puts the angry chaos in action by becoming the VR. And in July 1979 he is again becoming more chaotic than usual, which results in the reckless act of shoplifting and getting caught. And as he's again going through a more intensive period during that time, he will begin killing some months later. Was the botched Danville attack only for the reason that the husband was a light sleeper? There probably would have been other light sleepers too among his victims who still didn't wake up soon enough. He may have screwed up something, made more noise; because he was being more reckless at the time. But these causes and effects would only feed on each other in circles and it's hard to know what comes before and what comes after.

Remember , once he gets dumped he marries very quickly (on the rebound), probably regrets his hasty decision and has to live with it. Instead of getting divorced, he finds a hobby.
