So did JJD attack on 10-21-75?

Though authorities long discredited the alleged 10-21-75 attack as an official EAR attack, there are enough similarities to re-examine what happened that night in the light of what we "know" (i.e. nothing's been confirmed) about JJD being EAR and the VR.

The attack happened in Rancho Cordova on 10-21-75 on the 2600 block of Dawes Street. Many of the hallmarks of EAR's 1976 attacks were already there, though authorities believed that the EAR series actually began some 9 months later, in June 1976. Somehow the victims identified their attacker as black based on the attacker's black gloves, though information about this issue is scant.

Other problems with including this as a "canonical" EAR attack come down to matching this attack's occurrence with the timeline of activities known to be attributable to the Visalia Ranscaker. If JJD is both EAR and the VR, then there is some oddness concerning how the events could have transpired, seeing as how there is VR and EAR activity in a very short period of time. Could the VR activity on 10-21-75 be the work of another perp? Can the prowling and stalking activities noted on that day be the work of someone traveling between Visalia and Rancho Cordova?

Check out this timeline for October 1975:

Oct. 6 - A prowler was spotted multiple times in Visalia.

Oct. 15, 16 - Destruction of driveway lamp in Rancho Cordova.

Oct. 16 - Visalia Ransacker calls a victim: “I know you are alone and I am going to come over and * you.”

Oct. 18 - Cat burglary in Rancho Cordova between midnight and 10am.

Oct. 18 - Burglary in Rancho Cordova between 5:30pm and 9:15pm.

Oct. 18 - Burglary in Rancho Cordova between 6:30pm and 9pm.

Oct. 19 - Burglary in Rancho Cordova at around 11pm.

Oct. 20 - A prowler was spotted in Visalia.

Oct. 20 - Ransacking in Visalia.

Oct. 21 - Rape in Rancho Cordova between 4:30am and 6:30am

Oct. 21 - Prowler spotted in Visalia.

Oct. 21 - Visalia Ransacker calls the same victims from Oct. 16. This time, he calls twice.

Oct. 22 - Burglary in Rancho Cordova, same house from Oct. 19.

Oct. 23 - Prowler spotted in Visalia.

Oct. 24 - Visalia Ransacker ransacks several houses on this day.

If the timeline is accurate - and if JJD is both EAR and the VR, then there's some overlap in activity between the two "personas." It appears that JJD was continuing the VR spree while ramping up to becoming the EAR, and attacking in two separate cities, in two separate counties, in one very short period of time. How did he manage to get all of that done? Was he jetting back and forth between Visalia and Rancho Cordova JUST to attack and terrorize people? Were either city's VR/EAR activity that day the work of another offender?

I am trying to nail down a reliable timeline for the transition between JJD's time in Exeter and his time in Auburn. My central obsession is trying to get an accurate picture of how and when JJD lost about 20-30 pounds, since the descriptions and pictures of JJD while he was the VR (pre-summer 1976) and the descriptions and ONE pic of JJD while he was the EAR (post-summer 1976) seem to show two vastly different-looking people. Was JJD "inspired" to lose weight after the Claude Snelling murder? Did he lose the weight to help evade identification and capture?

It's possible, especially if some of the prowling reports were inaccurate (e.g., someone reported the gas man as a prowler).

It would be a great help if Exeter still had his time reports. Unfortunately, it appears they have few or no paper records associated with JJD.

That’s what I was thinking too. That a lot of driving and a lot of stalking, etc. for one 48-hour period. This part of the JJD timeline is pretty crucial too.

Could be that the RC burglaries were done by the Van Mundell group who were busted in 76', or another burglar of which it sounds there were a few then. As Shelby stated, these types of people will travel hundreds of miles to commit a crime so it's possible JJD may have done the Oct 20 and Oct 21st crimes in two different places, if he had those days off or whatever.

Just based on what I have seen, there was a lot of criminal activity in Sacto from a lot of different sources. There were criminals everywhere and the chances of someone other than JJD being called in as a prowler is quite possible. That being said, the Oct 21 and 23 Visalia events were never attributed directly to VR afaik. No ransacking occurred on those days, so the prowler reported may not have been him. Would have to see the reports to check the footprints found and exactly what constituted calling in the prowler. I know one of them was a guy looking in a window; but that is as far as the details go, iirc.

Even if they were all him, it is not impossible time-line wise. He would have been very busy driving around and doing all of this; but at this point in crimes he is hitting several homes in one night, which lines up with the VR activity on Oct 20, and also the RC burglaries on Oct 18. Those two series' are the same perp IMO, the others may or may not be.

He seems to be really ramping up at this point. He is excited, he must feel untouchable after getting away with Snelling incident (probably angry too that it didn't work in his favor) and his crimes have apparently taken over his psyche. He is living for his crimes and devoting all of his time to calling, prowling, burglaries, trolling for victims, etc. To me it looks like he is loosing control of his urges and is getting dangerously close to getting caught, he is taking huge risks and is extremely active during this time period. The Mcgowen shooting happens less than 7 weeks later and was his wake-up call that made him realize how out of control and sloppy he had become. That is the event that really got to him. It clearly showed him how close he had come to crossing the line, and how much heat he brought on himself by being so careless. Hell, I think its probable that he had seen or even worked with Mcgowen before. He reads the descriptions in Mcgowen's reports and sees the composites and starts to lose weight to change appearance (some of it could be stress-related as well, especially if he knew Mcgowen, he was probably shitting bricks for weeks). He grows a mustache (not sure when exactly; but before that newspaper picture was taken) after this event. He transfers out of the area, knowing its just a matter of time before Mcgowen is back in action and they will likely run into each other again and he will be recognized. This is all conjecture of course; but I don't see any reason why it can't be a working theory, and I think it answers the questions you asked in a logical way.

All good points. I really really want to see a timeline of his whole career take shape. I really want there to be more pics of him from 1976-79 so that we can actually see what he looked like, and why so few witnesses saw a man with a mustache prowling near EAR crime scenes. Was the mustache fake and he only wore it in his guise as a cop? So many unanswered questions.

The only mustache guy I can recall in reports is the runner that went by the lady fishing and said something like "oh boy my wife is gonna be mad!" as he streaked by. He always wore masks that either had a single hole for his mouth, or none, so I think it's definitely possible he had one for a lot of the crimes. A fake mustache is also possible, and would be a good disguise, especially if he wore it all the time at work, and that's how his colleagues always saw him. The canvassing always seems to reveal a younger-looking suspicious person with no 'stache and longer hair. Wigs and no stache during crimes, fake mustache and short hair at work. Simple and effective.

The 12-part Netflix miniseries that will inevitably be made about this case is gonna be LIT. There's so much I want to know NOW and it's so hard to be patient.

One of the most puzzling and curious aspects of this whole thing is JJD's relationship with his wife. I cannot begin to imagine what went on between the two of them - regarding their divorce, their kids, how she handled him getting arrested and fired in 1979, the transition between Exeter and Auburn, why they had three kids after he got busted, what she was doing while he was down in Goleta, etc. Everything is so frustratingly vague right now and it's driving me a little crazy and I keep having to tell myslef to be patient. If we only had SOME kind of comprehensive timeline for this guy!

HBO already picked up the rights to "I'll Be Gone in the Dark." I expect the documentary they do on this case will be definitive, though not likely to be released any time soon.

Makes it obvious that he MUST have been wearing wigs during some of the crimes and the prowling. It looks like he lost some weight post-Snelling and then started wearing disguises. I can't imagine that he could have worn his hair much longer than this while on the force, either at Exeter or Auburn. Keeping his hair short and wearing wigs while prowling and raping would further explain why none of his coworkers made the connection between this guy and the lean, young-looking guy with collar-length hair seen by witnesses and depicted in some of the composites.

Reading about it...molesting a seven-year-old girl? That doesn't seem very much like EARONS. That and the ambiguity about his ethnicity are what gives me pause in saying this was him. But there's certain details about this attack that do align with later attacks perpetrated by EARONS. I'm hesitantly saying yes, this was JJD.

Looks like he has an early-stage combover in that picture. None of the police sketches of EAR show a balding dude -- they all have very robust hairlines. So, either he was wearing good wigs during those prowling sightings, or the prowlers sighted were someone else. (I wonder if he shoplifted the wigs; the couldn't have been easy.)
