I don't believe EAR used anything of his own whether it had been a phone line tap or a towel. Everything he used belonged to the victims or was stolen. Clothes, gun, knife, shoelaces, bicycle, everything in his bag and the bag was all taken from someone else imo. Besides, when the EAR departed he was "gone into the dark". He was gone and all that he left of his was the mental terror he created that he left in the minds of his victims. That feeling of being terrorized, violated and reduced to nothing, "knowing you were going to die" but you didn't as Crompton would say.
Now, let's pick up where we left off.
Where is the concern for the phone line?
EAR would never use a phone tap. Not him. Not his M.O.
He stood on the birdbath in one of the first rape attacks
and attempted to cut the phone line. Why?
To ensure no one would come to his victims rescue.
From victim one to Janelle Cruz.
There would be no savior contacted by phone.
The attempt to cut phone line was either a red herring
Or he found another way to prevent a working phone
from contacting the police.
But if you think about EAR allowing one victim to answer
the phone and then hung it up. It was not his concern that
the phone could make calls imo. There was something beyond
that appeased his concern. Seeing and hearing kids play in the
street was more of a concern to the EAR than the police being contacted.
The call went out on one rape attack giving victim information, location
and "they have already took her to the hospital". Did someone know
something before everyone else? Some in LE are trying to find out where,
when, who, while obviously others already knew, responded to crime scene,
transported victim to hospital? How did that work? When it was said that
"the call went out" Would that had been the first call, the second? Who would
have been in a position to be first notified and first to respond to a reported EAR attack?
I can't remember if it was Shelby or Crompton who mentioned in their book that the call
went out on another EAR attack, think it was #5 but not positive. Anyway he said the
detectives rolled up on the scene and saw neighbors standing outside comforting others
and talking. One detective noticed the rape crisis center responders were on the scene.
Where do I stop? Right here.
