If that was true, he got the number before he broke in? But I don't think a short call could make sure they would not be home for a while.
I think you are missing out on what I am trying to get at, so i'll try to lay it out as clear as possible. Sorry i jumble a lot of my sentences together like incomplete thoughts.
1. He would go out for a night or two in certain areas, or would have cased certain houses in groups when he hit other houses in a close vicinity.
2. He would look them up, either in the yellow pages (by stealing a piece of mail, but that also hurts the names known stated before) or through a telephone service.
2b. He also could have broken into them during the late night, as they slept. It appears he got around most houses unnoticed before waking victims up, so this is also a possibility. They could have also been in a directory at the Y or some other place, as a lot of couples had kids who were most likely involved in other activities.
2c. He could have gotten their names and #s out of church directories (again, hurting my case for him not knowing their names in the first place)
3. He would call for weeks at a time. Most people have a routine setup, and if mom is taking her kid to soccer on tuesday afternoon two weeks in a row, chances are she will be taking them the 3rd week also. He could find out when they were out, and what hours they worked (if they both did)
4. I think the point of the call was also to listen to them. To hear someone get frustrated after the 8th hang up call in a week, or if she answers expecting someone else. I can only speculate on what a hangup call is for, but i know as a kid prank phone calls were hilarious (and immature) regardless of if the person got upset.
That is only my interpretation of it, i'm sure others such as yourself could speculate just as well if not better than I on why he would do hangup calls for weeks. To be honest i cant imagine him sitting in a bush or backyard for 2-3 hours waiting, but chances are it happened.
he would have had to somehow have gotten the # before he called, unless (as someone else suggested) he picked people based on their phone # in the first place, which i disagree with, mostly because he would have known the victims names before he went to the purse, and he even got one victims name wrong
My understanding is that he pretended to not know who they were to make it appear he was a vagrant in search of money and food. It's easy to understand why he did this. They are more likely to give in to his demands if they think this is a survivable encounter. Otherwise, they are more willing to take risks to save their lives and he might lose control of the situation. That's something he allowed to happen at least once. Even escalating to rape seems preferable as long as there's promises you won't be murdered as long as you do what he says. He seems to ease his victims into accepting increasingly more difficult fates.
