Ok...trying to get back on topic here—a couple of things.
1) Margaret Wardlow was still 12 when she was attacked on November 10. Her 13th birthday was November 22. She was thus 12, about to turn 13, at the time of her attack.
2) I agree with other posters who have suggested that we do not know what was reported or not at the time, due to the fact that we don’t have access to these records. We don’t know what their father did in retaliation or if he felt inclined to do anything. It’s also very unsurprising that parents at this time would tell their kids to stay quiet about the whole thing. My grandparents told my mom and aunt things like this all the time.
3) As far as hospital records relating to Connie’s attack, we don’t know the exact nature of her assault, so it’s a little premature to assume that she must have been in obvious need of immediate medical care. An assault like this would have been not only traumatizing, but utterly embarrassing for a girl her age and of her time to want to discuss in detail. It’s totally possible that she tried to deal with it herself, which is just * heartbreaking.
4) We don’t know that much of JJD’s school-age behavior. Younger kids often respond to trauma by acting out in school, towards teachers or among peers, and when this is not addressed, gradually escalate to more serious behaviors with age. The fact that he didn’t immediately become a violent rapist at age nine says nothing about his potential for such actions in the future.
Wow. Look—a whole post devoid of ad hominem attacks and inflammatory speculation.
It's disturbing and heartbreaking that this would have happened to a 7-year-old Connie. With a 10-year-old Joe looking on as this horrific event unfolded, it had to have been psychologically damaging.
When they told their parents of Connie's rape and were subsequently told to never speak of it again...well, Joe didn't just keep silent, he began screaming and pouring out his anguish, pain, fear, and murderous hatred on victims throughout his lifetime. It's appalling. And beyond tragic on so many levels.
