Was he on vacation mid-78? Or commuting from Sac?

Some questions that I'm troubled by. I don’t expect comprehensive answers since I think we're ALL speculating, but I had a few things I wanted to ask of everyone.
I'm getting all my info from the Cold Case EARONS site and several Reddit timelines.

What was JJD doing in the late spring through Fall of 1978? Presumably he and Sharon were living in Citrus Heights in 1978-79, right? (If I'm wrong about the dates, please let me know and I'll edit). And he's still working at Auburn PD.
But he's attacking elsewhere by June of 1978. He's already attacked in Stockton. In June he attacks in Modesto and Davis twice, respectively. If you take a look at the comprehensive timeline you can see that there are prowling, stalking, harassing, etc. incidents reported around the time these attacks take place.
Before the 6/5/78 attack in Modesto, the victims in that attack had been receiving obscene phone calls since April of that year. They receive these calls for about two months before they are actually attacked. So it's obvious that JJD had already selected this area, if not these specific victims, by April in order to attack them in June. While still living in Citrus Heights? That's a long way to go just to scope out a victim.
EAR's last attack, before the move South to Modesto, was in Sacramento, on April 14, 1978. That attack was aborted. For the next several months, there are no reported EAR-associated prowls, break-ins, sightings, etc. in the Sac area. But April is when the phone calls to victims in Modesto and Davis begin. Had he ALREADY selected his next victims outside of the Sac area? He would have had to have traveled about 35-60 minutes to get from his home to the location of the attacks. Did he scope this area out first before attacking? Was he doing this while on duty? I can see prowling around an area nearby where one lives, but given that it's EAR we're talking about, he most likely had to go out prowling on multiple nights while also making "recon" phone calls.
So that means between April 14 and June 5, EAR would have to go travel out to Modesto on multiple occasions to ensure that the area he had in mind was amenable to his activities. And then he attacks in Davis and/or Modesto three more times in June. If you look at the timeline, he's committing acts that would require him to be PHYSICALLY present in Modesto or Davis to carry them out - i.e. these aren't just phone calls. He would have to be in that area of the state A LOT to do what he is responsible for doing. And if you look at the pace of his (reported) activities while in that area, he's there on multiple consecutive nights (for instance the week of Independence Day, he's seen on three consecutive nights: 7/3, 7/4, and 7/5). What was he doing out there? He and Sharon live pretty far away. Was he travelling down there multiple nights at a time, FROM the Sac area, just to prowl? Did he have some place to stay in the area?
(What's even stranger are seeming anomalies like this: A prowler was spotted in GOLETA in the fall of 1978. No other EAR-associated incidents or sightings in Goleta are reported for the October-November timeline in Goleta. This seems like an isolated sighting – was it someone else?)
So between mid-April and July 6, 1978, there is frequent EAR-associated activity in the Davis/Modesto area. Was JJD STAYING in this area during the time? That's about three months where either JJD had to have been staying in the Davis/Modesto area - OR, he was still living in the Citrus Heights area and travelling out to Davis/Modesto many nights out of the week...just to prowl? I mean, yeah, he also carried out five attacks in this three-month span, but to be commuting out to those areas almost every night is a long way to travel. Did he have family or friends in the Davis/Modesto area?
Check this out:
Between 9/23/78 and 10/13/78 there is almost nightly prowler activity in Concord, and there are two reported attacks in this area during this timeframe (late Sept/early Oct.). Concord isn't THAT far away from the Sac area - but it's still pretty dang far away. If he was still living and working in the Sac area (remember, he's WORKING a full-time job as a cop in Auburn during this time), he's travelling well over an hour TO Concord, and well over and hour BACK to Auburn or Citrus Heights nearly every night just to go prowling and stalking? It seems like an absurd amount of traveling. Either he knew someone out there or he was putting crazy miles on his car(s).
On Oct. 22, he catches a kid in Auburn trying to TP a police car. So he's back in Auburn by 10/22. Did he take a vacation? How did he explain his absence from work, if he indeed WAS absent from work during this timeframe?
By Oct. 28, he's in San Ramon. More commuting from Auburn? He's only seen on one night, however. There are no pre-attack sightings of JJD in San Ramon prior to the date of the attack. ("Sunny" saw a suspicious man in a car a few days before the attacks, but the man in that car was identified and cleared.) So that one's probably a one-off.
When EAR moves even farther South to San Jose, it's even more odd to consider that he was about two hours away from his home and must have made it back to Citrus Heights shortly thereafter, since there are no sightings of an EARish person besides what was seen that one night. He's not staying in this area for an extended time, he was probably there that one night.
But then he comes back down to San Jose AGAIN one month later, on the 2nd of December. That’s two attacks in San Jose in two consecutive months in the November/December 1978 timeframe. And there are no associated prowling incidents reported in the days surrounding them, which would indicate that these attacks are also both one-offs. It seems like he travelled all the way down to San Ramon and San Jose over the course of a single night JUST to attack people; not a lot of time for prowling and stalking. He could have been staying with friends or family we don't know about yet. But these could have also been crimes of opportunity rather than the long-term patient stalking he seemed to prefer.
Which leads me to ask: where was JJD staying in late April/early May and late September/early October 1978?
He had to either have been travelling quite a lot of time to be able to carry out so much prowling and break-ins, etc. in those specific areas over the course of these extended periods – or he found places to stay while he was prowling in the Davis/Modesto area and the Concord area, respectively. OR he was staying in a nearby town and commuting to crime scenes, but still staying away from his home in Citrus Heights. But JJD traveling almost every night out to Modesto from Citrus Heights seems exhausting to me, and all *I’m* doing is talking about it.
What are your thoughts on this subject? Did he find some place temporary to stay for a while in Davis, Modesto, or Concord? Or was he travelling hours out of the way from Auburn or Citrus Heights on any given night with the expectation that he’ll be back at the police station in Auburn the next morning? Again, he was working full time as a cop during these periods. How was he able to cover these long distances? How was he explaining his absences to his superiors at Auburn PD? Was he taking vacation time to do all this stuff? Would a beat cop in Auburn be eligible for almost three months worth of vacation time, and then be able to take yet ANOTHER extended vacation in the late fall of that year?
