Was he on vacation mid-78? Or commuting from Sac?

if he had access to satellite images he could plan these operations from his den. that's why I think he could fit so many obligations into his schedule. once he had a hunting ground and a parking/escape, the final straw would be actually going to that area finding a target and then creating a grid on his map to that target. he would probably do that for two or three targets simultaneously which is why there are clusters throughout this spree. it looks like holes just made a hypothetical remark consistent with his original theory. He is far out with that theory and going farther out on that limb. if he hasn't been gaggged the prosecution must be pretty confident in the evidence they're recovering from D'Angelo's house.
I think it's more plausible to suggest that JJD had friends or family in Modesto, Davis, and/or Concord and was staying with them during his Spring and Fall '78 crime sprees in those areas. When he was attacking in those areas it was as if he'd set up a temporary base there - he was going out and attacking in those towns nearly every night, sometimes four or five consecutive nights. And this is while he's working as a cop all the way up in Auburn. It's basically the equivalent of traveling from (roughly) Cincinatti to Indianapolis and back EVERY CONSECUTIVE NIGHT for a span of four-five weeks. What I'm theorizing is that JJD was staying with people he knew in those areas, and while he was staying there, he's going out every night and prowling and stalking in attractive, middle-upper class neighborhoods in those areas.
Either that, OR he picked up a night-time side gig as a security guard for a private company, and that work took him to Davis, Modesto, and Concord for four-five week bursts.
Either theory seems plausible to me. What I'd like to know are a few things:
1. Was JOHN DeAngelo involved in any of this activity?
2. Was JJD taking vacation time off from his job at Auburn PD? Enough to take four-five week vacations twice a year? Because in order to accomplish was he did in Modesto, Davis, and Concord he would have to either be STAYING in those towns for month-long stretches at a time, OR he was commuting from Auburn and attacking in towns some 1-2 hours away for five-six hours a night and then returning to Auburn every morning to go to his regular job.
3. How was he choosing his victims in those towns during those stays? It seems like he was there long enough to stalk and prowl and make prepatory phone calls over a relatively long stretch of time. The attacks in San Ramon and San Jose I can buy as one-offs: one night, drive down from Auburn, hit a random house in San Jose, boom, drive back up to Auburn a few hours later. Those attacks strike me as crimes of opportunity because if you look at the timeline, there are almost NO reports of prowler activity on the days and nights surrounding the attacks in San Ramon and San Jose. Whereas with the attacks in Modesto, Davis, and Concord, JJD seemed to based out of those places temporarily - he was there for literal months at a time and there are reports of familiar EAR-like activity almost every night before and after the attacks. It seems like he was trying out the same time-intensive, elaborate stalking techniques he had already employed in Citrus heights, Rancho Cordova, Carmichael, etc. but in a different area: call homes, go out prowling, scope out multiple houses in the same night, and so on. He couldn't have done this if he was coming out from Auburn every night; or, if he DID come all the way out from Auburn every night he was putting fantastic miles on his car and evidently could exist for long stretches of time without sleeping....AND how did he cover this at work in Auburn? Did Auburn PD know that he had some kind of side gig, if he did have a side gig?
There's just so many things about this case that have me scratchin' my head.
Every single assault happened on the weekend !!!!! How is that a coincidence? I used to think that he relocated too but your analysis indicates he was still working in October in Auburn when that new phase of assaults began. That alone tells you he did in fact commute. The map being traced before he drew the diagrams tells me that was probably his MO. His footprints were traced to an airport in Davis. He was probably picked up at a Modesto airport by a taxi. The San Jose assaults were next to an airport. OTOH the 16 y-o babysitter case is unique though because he really kept tabs on her. Perhaps a police scanner helped him avoid LE back to Sac. post assault.
