This is something that I've been pondering the last few days. We know that the Smith's were murdered the night of March 13 or the early morning hours of March 14. When Lyman's son, Gary, discovered their bodies on Sunday, March 16, at 2:00pm, their alarm clock was ringing. We can pretty much assume that the Smith's set their alarm clock before they went to bed on Thursday and that it went off on Friday morning. Let's say that they set their alarm for 6:00am. Their alarm clock was ringing from 6:00am on Friday until 2:00pm on Sunday, when their bodies were discovered. That's almost 60 hours. I wasn't alive in 1980 so I don't know how the alarm clocks worked back then but is it possible for an alarm clock to ring for 60 hours straight without the batteries dying? If so, then disregard what I'm about to say.
We know that JJD was prowling the area after the murders. Is it possible that he came back into the house and set off the alarm because the Smith's bodies were not yet discovered and he hoped the incessant ringing would attract a neighbor? On the ID documentary, Charlene's friend said that she went to the house on Friday and rang the doorbell but no one answered. I don't know how far the master bedroom is from the front door so I can't say, for certain, if she would have heard the ringing alarm clock at the front door. Now, the bathroom window was found open about 6 inches. Does anyone know if this bathroom was close to the master bedroom or was it actually in the master bedroom? The bathroom window is found open about 6 inches. If JJD entered that way, on the night of the murders, wouldn’t he close the window behind him to make sure that no one hears what went on inside the house? And if he left that way, he certainly couldn’t fit through 6 inches of space. The window had to be open more and then he closed it behind him when he left. But, why not close it all the way when he exited after the murders? And if the window was left open, and JJD didn’t come back after the murders, wouldn’t Charlene’s friend have heard the alarm clock ringing because of the open window? It makes me wonder if JJD stuck around the ONS crime scenes to see the aftermath when the police came and started their investigation. Other than the Harrington's, which were discovered two days later, all of the other ONS victims' bodies were discovered the next day. Maybe JJD rode his bike past the crime scenes the next day, acted like a concerned citizen, and watched LE work. But, since no one discovered the Smith's right away, JJD went back in their house, set off their alarm and opened the bathroom window, hoping a neighbor would hear it ringing for hours and then go to the house to investigate and discover the bodies.
