What I meant was that connecting these things to JJD specifically would of been impossible. Connecting the EAR to the VR was totally plausible, particularly for jurisdictions that were actively working the case, and yes, that link was made by many. Connecting the actual person to the crimes is an entirely different thing that some folks confuse as the same thing.
Thanks for the clarification. But I'll have to disagree that no one could have connected JJD to VR.
A lot of people were convinced that EAR was VR. A lot of people thought EAR was LE. All it would have taken is someone who believed both of those things looking at cops and former cops in the surrounding area of Visalia. Then, tracking his movements back to the Sacramento area. A smart person who stumbled upon the baby face Exeter photo could have dug further on DeAngelo and easily found the Auburn photo online. The timeline would then click. Boom, next thing you know, he is a POI and Dr. Doogie is out digging in his trash.
If Holes had not been so anti VR, anti cop, anti military theory, I think he would have got him years ago.
That’s still a lot of cops to vet. Sacramento is fairly large and how far do you expand out from each city to cross reference. You have to get every cops detailed employment history for each city (all of which is likely only on paper and not searchable on a computer at the time). It’s still a long stretch in my opinion and it doesn’t make it easier when you have decent suspects with histories in the offending areas. You would ultimately have to disregard all of those leads and devote yourself full time to gathering said info on cops. You’d have to be totally convinced this guy was a cop and not just somewhat certain and be willing to work through all of that incomplete info. Even the guys who were from Visalia who believed the EAR was the VR could of cross referenced citizens who had lived within a certain radius of each area and come up with a list, but that info simply wouldn’t have existed in a format you could work with in those days.
