The James River is a river in the U.S. state of Virginia that begins in the Appalachian Mountains and flows 348 miles (560 km)[3] to Chesapeake Bay. The river length extends to 444 miles (715 km) if one includes the Jackson River, the longer of its two source tributaries.[3] It is the longest river in Virginia and the 12th longest river in the United States that remains entirely within a single state. Williamsburg, Virginia’s first colonial capital, and Richmond, Virginia's current capital, lie on the James River.
Re: Nobling & Edwards Murder
As I recall (but I have to re-read to be certain), this couple was marched through marsh from the Ragged Island Wildlife Refuge, by the James River, to a beach where they were both shot. It was theorized that David Nobbling attempted to flee and was shot in the shoulder while running, then in the head execution style, as he lay where he fell on the ground. (all from memory so I could be off)--- that police and/or FBI had to be brought to the crime scenes in a loaned out recreational vehicle that had large wheels.
Check out the job description of State Special Police Officers (link below) who patrol areas such as where this crime took place. Job requirements include boating skills and hunting knowledge, must carry knife, rope, firearms, be able to move through tough terrain and marsh, carry heavy objects such as a bear and deer, criminology education, etc.

What if the CPK was a state special police officer who was working or just got off work the night of that crime, and was travelling/patrolling by boat? His territory could have included the Ragged Island Wildlife Refuge and/or James River. If so, the killer may have been leading the couple to a boat and when David Nobbling realized the perp's intention was to force them on it, David turned and ran? The killer could possible have intended to shoot them on the boat and toss their bodies in the river, far off from land.
PS/personal side note: Just imagining that David may have done - turned and ran for his life! It is just so heart wrenching! For myself, this is the worst and hardest part of studying this case - imagining what the victims endured in their last moments here on earth. It is difficult. At the same time, it drives me even more to help to identify their killer. Despite whether that was what happened, the idea that this couple had been killed in the middle of the night while on a date just doing what everyone has done, is just so, so, so, so, so sad ….. my heart goes out to their families.
Tonight I will dedicate a special prayer for the souls of David and Robin. As well as for the souls of all the victims of the CPMs. May they all RIP.
