I've given a lot of thought to the 44 stabs, and I researched murders committed by multiple stabbings. They are typically committed on a spouse/lover by a spouse/lover. Not always, but it is usually the case. It occurs following a period of built up anger, jealousy, loss of control of the victim, the victim ending the relationship.
I have not found any similar murders that took place in Virginia around the same time or within a few years of Bowman's, which leaves me thinking this was an exclusive one to the killer. This was either the only murder the killer committed or the only murder the killer committed of this style.
I suspect Bowman was most likely targeted, and that it was not a random choice of the nearest door to bang on. Bowman's cop car was parked right out front. The killer probably waited for Bowman to get home, and not followed him there. The killer was prepared - knife, disguise (wig, sunglasses, plastic construction hat), escape plan, did not park near Bowma's residence.
I doubt the killer was some crazed or drugged out maniac. He was too organized. He got Bowman to open his door. He got away. He knew what he did was wrong, so he took off fast. He hasn't bragged to anyone about it.
Believing the spouse/lover aspect has severely limited investigations, including our own.
I agree it's in regards to a relationship, however, I wouldn't focus on an intimate spouse/lover one. If the suspect felt threatened enough and held Bowman responsible for some loss, that would be enough for him/her to be that enraged to repeatedly stab someone.
