David Knobling and Michael Margaret were both adopted.
I have been speculating that the CPK targeted 20 year old Caucasian males, and that he stalked many until he found ones who belonged to tight-knit families, had doting and protective parents, had siblings whom they were close to, and who owned their own vehicles. I speculate that he stalked his prime choices in the weeks prior to the legal holiday weekend he intended to kill, and first made sure the male would have a female with him. Daniel Lauer may not have been chosen in advance. The rest stop may have been chosen. It may have been chosen because there were a lot of couples that stopped at it. The CPK may have decided to attack far from his regular killing grounds when too many questions came up about the clothes that were returned to Keith Call's car.
Although David Knobling and Michael Margaret were adopted, they were nevertheless bonded with their parents and siblings as if they came from the wombs of their adoptive mothers. If the CPK knew both boys were adopted, how could he have known? I don't know at what age the two were adopted. If they were young boys, could they have been in an orphanage together, and also with the CPK. If they were adopted as babies, could the CPK have known the families? Could he have known Karl Knobling, and at some point in time it was mentioned? That is, if the CPK even knew at all. It seems like such a huge coincidence that 2 of a small group of boys were adopted. If you put a hundred people together in a room, none of them may have been adopted. And if any were, maybe it would only be one of them. Two boys who were adopted, also happened to be murdered by the same killer. It may be a coincidence, but it's one hell of a coincidence.
David Knobling's truck was wired special for the radio. He worked on it together with his father. His father probably helped him with a lot of things like that.
Keith Call's father gave him the red Toyota as his graduation present.
Michael Margaret's father went hunting and fishing with Michael frequently.
Jeff Scott's father was an ex-mayor of Bluefield. He provided Jeff with the best of everything and participated in all his school activities.
All the male victims had close bonds with their fathers, and they came from exceptional family backgrounds.
