Ok, i'll explain the similarities etc, I see. Some of these may indeed be fairly universal among this type of offender, but anyway:
Use of multiple vehicles
Above average intelligence
Ran outdoors with no *ing pants on! (run Forrest, run!)
Lack of fear (common among psychopaths)
Obscene phone calls to victims
Power-assertive rapist
physically attractive to females (at least, going by most of the police sketches of EARONS)
Had trouble getting and keeping an erection during the rapes
Came prepared with oven mitt gloves
Engaged in voyeurism and exhibitionism
Successfully raped dozens of times before finally apprehended
Escalation of violence. Seems almost like a drug user who needs a bigger and bigger 'hit' to scratch their itch. Most likely would have eventually murdered if he hadn't been caught, IMO.
I'm sure there are plenty more, but that's what I recall at present.
Also of interest:
- He tried to frame another guy for his whole series of crimes (who was already convicted of 3rd degree rape in an unrelated case) by committing one of his rapes virtually right on the guys' doorstep.
- He was constantly in some different phase of a bizarre diet, alternately fasting/cleansing and eating junk food. Hence, his weight and general appearance would fluctuate between thin and clear skinned to bloated and acne ridden. Maybe the real EARONS was discounted as a suspect because at the time of his arrest he was bulkier than usual? Just a thought.
- Would vary his occupation/job constantly. EARONS may also have very well done this. Again, this is not and unusual trait in psychos, though it would explain why EARONS seemed to be so knowledgeable in many areas ie police procedures, military, phone stuff, realtor/real estate, etc etc.
- Appeared meek and mild in his personal life, as I'm guessing most aggressive rapists would be, including EARONS.
- Had an overly dominant mother (as Terri states) and ineffectual father, but no recorded instances of abuse of any kind. To commit such brutal crimes as these after being brought up in such a seemingly benign environment, made me reassess my perceptions of EARONS to some degree.
- His father was a rather prominent and (somewhat) powerful member of the community, being assistant editor on one of the major newspapers in the area. There is some speculation that EARONS himself or a member of his family had a similar standing in the community at the time, also.
- Although he committed his crimes outdoors rather than breaking into homes (the major difference between the 2, I guess), both seemed to get off on how close in proximity other people were while they were carrying out their crimes, in EARONS case, it was next door neighbors literally less a dozen feet away in many instances.
- Preyed on/used females (and his father) for financial gain.
- Convinced his current girlfriend to lie on the witness stand in his shoplifting case.
- Tried to make out that he was "whiter than white" in the above case AND the rape trial even though he already had a (relatively minor) criminal history.
- Superficial charm, especially with members of the opposite sex.
- Was said by his girlfriend at the time to be "impossible to get to know".
- Had very few friends (although they seem to have been fairly loyal to him).
- Grandiosity of though and self image, wild imaginings of success, but never really seemed to put any real effort into anything or therefore, get anywhere. Again, this seems to be a common trait among psychos (Bundy, for a prime instance).
- Seemed to prefer the company of females. Most likely felt intimidated and inferior to other males. I'm guessing this may fit EARONS also.
- Avoided manual labor, often avoided the sun, and was preoccupied with his appearance, therefore he was actually much older than he looked and than most victims described him as. This may very well apply to EARONS.
No, he's not EARONS - these series of crimes were committed in Spokane in the early 80's, and he's too tall (6.1 approx). I'm just hoping that this will challenge some peoples assumptions and perhaps get some of us thinking in a different and hopefully more fruitful direction.
