I have commented before on how impossible it is to construct a timeline on the whereabouts of Mr. Fred Coe. This is because if you do your due diligence and use more than one source for your information you immediately run into a conflict. In prior comments I focused on the late 1960s/early 1970s, here we will take a close look at 1976 to 1978.
As you can see in the following youtube clip I have posted before, Coe, as best as he can recollect, returned to Spokane in 04/1978. This is very interesting in light of the fact the revised Maggiore sketch was published that same month in 1978.

Yet here, in this news article from 1981, we have in his own words that he returned to Spokane 1976 and spent the next two years trying to open a disco there.
So was it 1976 or was it 1978. Why does he need to lie about such petty stuff. And don't say maybe he forgot. He spent his entire prison sentence fixating on his sentence and his charges and his verdict. I doubt he just 'forgot' where he was during those critical years.
Then in the Phenix report we have this blurb about Coe's employment history which has him in Vegas in 1976 and Santa Monica in 1977 (remember the youtube clip where he stated he was back and forth between Vegas and Los Angeles between 1976 and 1978?
Employment History
The Page evaluation (04-02-91) indicated Mr. Coe worked in college for a time as a radio announcer. He then attended school in San Francisco and Huntington Beach area in radio broadcasting in 1968. The Indeterminate Sentencing Review Board (ISRB) document dated 05-16-88 from Patricia A Thompson, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Spokane County, indicated in early 1970 Mr. Coe moved to Los Angeles for a year and worked in the "theater business" which apparently was employment in a movie theater while attempting to get into screenwriting. He returned to Spokane in early 1971 according to the ISRB document, while Dr. Page's (04-02-91) report indicated he later worked as a radio announcer in Spokane between 1968 and 1969 and again in 1971. He resided in Las Vegas and worked as a radio announcer at KENO and in discotheques until 1977. Upon his return to Spokane, he was employed as a part-time realtor and pursued a mail order business which he had initiated in 1969. That business evidentially involved the sale of publications of a "how-to" nature and Mr. Coe reportedly profited from the mail order business until his arrest in March of 1981. The amount of profit is unknown given that records indicated that Mr. Coe was not a successful businessman and primarily lived off of his parents.
In an interview with Dr. Wetzler (05-12-81 ), Mr. Coe reported working in a number of different radio stations in 1968 and then moving to California where he was unable to find work in radio. He became assistant manager of a theater chain and then became interested in writing a novel which he attempted unsuccessfully to publish over the next few years. In 1972, he went to Las Vegas to work at a radio job and reported he "did quite well." He said he "moved up the ladder in the disco business"'from 1974 to 1976 when he decided to be a publisher. He wrote "Sex and the White House," a satire, but could not sell it and became financially burdened and acquired a poor credit standing. He went to Spokane to get in the real estate business and also worked at discos.
Mr. Coe lived with his parents when he had economic need. In late 1977, he did not have luck working in the disco business and he went to Santa Monica, California, at that time feeling "depressed, suicidal and frustrated." He finished a novel in the fall of 1978. Mr. Coe went to real estate license school and started working in real estate. He reported to Dr. Wetzler that he was "a natural in it
superstar" but "didn't put time and effort into it because interested in side issues," such as bringing the big city atmosphere to Spokane.
The interview notes with Dr. Wetzler (05-12-81) indicated that Mr. Coe reported, "Before arrest, I had tremendous potential and intelligence - I was going to be a hardworking, dedicated real estate salesman and then developer. I was going to really work hard - Obviously made mistakes - Loss of credit- (blames wife)then says it is my fault. Probably spent too much time with reality."
The PSI, Case No. 81-1-00230-8, 11-09-81, indicated he reported he worked from November 1980 to March of 1981 at Roger Crane and Associates Real Estate office in Spokane, Washington; from November 1979 to November 1980, he worked at Williams Maine Realtors; from October 1978 (a Spokane Police Department Additional Report No. 78-21058 dated 04-23-81 indicated he started in January 1979) to October 1979, he worked at James S. Black and Company Real Estate Company; and he was self-employed in Correntael House Comm., Entertainment Productions.
So is he lying? It sure seems like he is and if he is then why is he lying? Could he have something to hide? He lied all the time about everything. The harder thing would be to believe he was telling the truth in any of these instances. And yet there are concrete data points which support some assertions. For one, the dates of the Spokane rape incidents do seem to support a return to Spokane in 1978 but he doesn't go full throttle on his spree, he doesn't seem to have done that until late summer of 1979. Maybe something changed and caused him to shift his geographical focus?
