June 29, 1967 A Leavenworth connection:Ten feet from Bates's body, investigators discovered a cheap, paint-spattered Timex brand wristwatch with a seven-inch circumference along with a footprint of a shoe produced by Leavenworth prisoners sold solely in military outlets. The shoe size was between eight and ten inches.[2] Although only 5 ft 3 in (1.60 m) in height, Bates had been an athletic girl. Both an examination of the crime scene and Bates's subsequent autopsy revealed ample evidence of a ferocious physical struggle between Bates and her murderer; she having evidently scratched her assailant's arms,[5] face and head and torn off his wristwatch.[n 1]
So was it Fred's dad Gordo's only trip to Leavenworth? Maybe he was there summer '66 too and brought home some brand new buy local shoes. Maybe.
Also of interest here is that Gordon Coe's 1967 visit to Ft. Leavenworth is not present on the records I received indicating that there may have been a lack of completeness in the service records. These documents were quite obviously prepared before the computer age, they clearly appear to have been typed. Therefore, this was not an oversight while preparing records to fulfill my request. This brings up the possibility that other records are not included here, either by omission or another explanation is that they did not fall under the category of Record of Assignments. Of particular interest to me would have been Gordon Coe's use of his military benefits when he was off duty to fly to other locations and take advantage of free meals and housing at bases for himself and his family.
Also of interest in the records I did receive are visits to Reno, NV in 1969 and 1972 as his son at one point in time referred to that location as a place he himself had 'lived', which does not reconcile with anything else anywhere.
I am also supplying a link to the information above concerning Cheri Jo Bates:
