A police impersonator from Yorktown, Virginia, near the site of the Colonial Parkway Murders, has been arrested in Maryland.

Note that the suspect, Timothy Ervin Trivett, is now 54 years old. He would would have been about 21 at the start of the Colonial Parkway Murders.

Maryland State Police say they arrested a police impersonator attempting to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 695 on Saturday night.

Police identified the accused in a news release Sunday as Timothy Ervin Trivett, 54, of Yorktown, Va. Trivett was arrested at the scene without incident and charged with impersonating a police officer and multiple handgun violations, the police said, adding that he was the driver and sole occupant of a Chevy Impala involved in the incident.

According to the news release, shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday night, a Maryland state trooper observed a 2012 black-and-white Chevy Impala with blue and white flashing lights attempting to make a traffic stop on a gray Honda Accord on the outer loop of I-695 at Greenspring Avenue in Baltimore County.

The trooper pulled behind the Impala and immediately made contact with the impersonating police officer, later identified as Trivett. Trivett was wearing what appeared to be police equipment, body armor and a uniform.

State police say they have consulted with the Baltimore County State’s Attorney. Trivett was processed at the Golden Ring Barrack and transported to the Baltimore County Detention Center where he was later released on an unsecured bond.

No attorney was listed in court records as representing Trivett.

He was from Yorktown located at one end of the Parkway, so he would be very familiar with the area.   He was impersonating a Police officer.  He owned a gun.  He had a car set up with flashing lights and was caught pulling people over. 

Most importantly was that he was 21 years old in 1986 close to the same age as most of the victims and we have suspected before that the victims would feel more comfortable giving a ride to someone close to their own age.  Possibly since he was close in age to his victims that he had met them casually at parties or thru school. 

Also if he had caught a ride with Keith/Sandra from the party that night, he lived past Grafton in Yorktown and this may explain why Keith drove past Grafton and towards the Parkway, he was taking the CPK home.  Maybe the CPK produced a handgun once they got close to the Parkway and forced Keith to pull into one of the first turnouts close to Yorktown, so that the CPK could quickly retreat back towards his home in Yorktown.  this would also explain why Keith's family said his driver side seat was positioned more forward than usual, Keith moved it forward for the CPK to sit in the back.  Didn't Keith's dad also say the drivers seat back was forward as if someone had been sitting in the back.  Keith's dad also saw beer cans and a grey coat in the backseat, that disappeared, maybe the CPK had hid in the bushes when he saw a car coming and once Keith's dad left the area he returned to remove his belongs and fled back home in nearby Yorktown. 

I hope Police are checking this guys whole life history...  where he lived over the years, schools he went too, was he in the military, did he work with any of the victims, talking to past neighbors, was he at William & Mary or on the Parkway on the day Cathy/Becky were last seen, was he at the party Keith/Sandra were last seen at?   etc....   lots to investigate with this guy!! 

 

EDIT:  did he frequent or work at one of the local movie theaters?   Work at a 7-11?

There's no question he should be looked at, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high. If he was released on an unsecured bond, chances are he didn't have much of a record (of course, neither did JJD). Studies on police impersonators are few, but the only one I've seen indicates that they tend to be older than average offenders. And some people think the offense has been on the rise over the past decade due to easier access to police gear on the internet.

Also, I'm not at all familiar with Virginia or Maryland, but wouldn't an interstate be a lot busier than the Colonial Parkway? If so, that seems like a significant departure from the CPK m/o.

not getting my hopes up too much on this guy, but Daniel & Anna were abducted from busy I-64 and their murders are attributed to the CPK.  This guy just happen to be close in age to most of the CPK victims & lived at one end of the Parkway close to where Keith's car was found & he impersonates a police officer and owns a gun.   lives close enough to the Parkway to have know it well enough to traverse it and not be seen.  Might even have went to school with some of the victims or met them at a party or bumped into them at the local 7-11...  

I have my own factual personal knowledge on police impersonators not being older.     An acquaintance of mine back in the early 80's pulled me over with flashing lights, he drove an older dodge car that was also the same type that police drove back then.  I consider myself a smart guy, but he fooled me into believing he was a cop right down to the flashlight as he approached my car, heck I even had my license out ready to hand to him.  He was only 20, he was a cop wanna be & went on to be a prison guard.  So don't put too much into any study, sometimes you'll be surprised.  A young 21 year old can be very capable of unspeakable crimes.

According to charging documents, Trivett was dressed in a dark-blue uniform with patches on the sleeves, an exterior vest with a badge that stated "Special Officer" and a black nylon gun belt. Police said the gun belt carried three pepper spray containers, an expandable baton, two sets of handcuffs, a knife and two handguns. Police said they found 20 rounds of ammunition.

"Anybody with a loaded handgun I would believe to be dangerous, particularly if you are a motorist getting pulled over by somebody who is possibly trying to look like a police officer," Russo said.

State police said Trivett's uniform was that of a security guard and that Trivett did not have a carry permit or a security guard license.

"He had no law enforcement credentials," Russo said. "He was outfitted in what looked like real police garb."

Police said Trivett told the trooper that he activated the lights in his car because someone was tailgating him. Police said Trivett told the trooper that he was not trying to pull the car over.

Trivett was arrested without incident and charged with impersonating a police officer, as well as multiple handgun charges. He posted $10,000 bail. His next court date is Aug. 21.

Authorities have advice for motorists who are concerned about being pulled over by a fake officer.

"Call 911 or #77. Get a uniform on the other end of the phone to verify this traffic stop," Russo said.

State police said they are seeking anyone else who may have been pulled over to call the Golden Ring Barrack at 410-780-2700.

I wish the newspapers would report who it was that Trivett was trying to pull over on a bogus traffic stop?  Just one person who was the driver, the driver and a passenger or more than one passenger, a young couple....?

As if the trooper wouldn't see that another car was directly behind Trivett and couldn't tell that Trivett was trying to pull over another car....  Two very obvious things.....

Those items weren't being used to decorate the inside of his Impala.  Being in possession of these items while trying to pull off a bogus traffic stop is more than merely impersonating an officer.  Trivette was out to kidnap someone.  Even if Trivette could explain away the knife and handguns as hobby items that he uses while camping or fishing, and at a shooting range, there's still the pepper spray and handcuffs.  The purposes those items serve are, the pepper spray - to disable someone, and  and handcuffs - to restrain them. 

Trivett is dangerous, and he is from Virginia.

Not to diminish the danger of being in law enforcement, since(russo) thinks ANYONE with a loaded handgun is dangerous he should be driving a desk. He is an oath breaker, and needs Constitution and bill of rights training, remember second amendment and everyone's right to self defense? These mild tyrants (not all of them) would rather take our rights than do their jobs properly as they SHOULD be required. After all, it is their jobs to deny rights, just not permenantly. Glad they got Trivitt off the streets, but Russo would rather do it with an armed drone and facial recognition. Got any weapons in the car? I don't consent to a search. He's got a gun! Imagine getting pulled over by JJD types. There, my gun rights conflict rant has concluded.

Is it normal for a police officer to have two sets of handcuffs?  IMHO Mr. Trivett had two sets of handcuffs in case he pulled over a couple, who he wanted to abduct or have complete control over.  Also we see that he had two handguns, isn't having one handgun enough, why the second gun?  lots of possibilities on it's intended use.

I agree with the statements above concerning the handcuffs, your standard impersonator would have no need to be in possession of two sets of handcuffs, even if they are attached to a gun belt it seems too suspicious for someone attempting to mimic a police officer.

Mustangman beat me to it. I was going to comment on Trivett having TWO sets of handcuffs. His premeditation is quite obvious.

Trivett didn't have certification to carry handgun. Does the law discern between how many handguns? I mean, not certified to carry even one. Why not just carry three or four? This guy was truly brazen.

I'm happy to hear this creep was caught in the act. I just hope LE keeps eyes on him until his court date. He most likely will act out with violence before his court date.
