This story is true and accurate. In happened in late 1977 on the exact date, I am not sure. The location was Benita Drive at Coloma Road. The 7-11. That location is now a laundry mat and like most apartment communities along that road, there have been better times. The Clerk at the store may be the only person who actually saw the EAR and knew what he looked like for various reasons. The main reason was that individual (Who I believe was JJD) was a frequent late night visitor who bought beer only after spending a considerable amount of time browsing the magazines at the rear of the store. I had been in that store many times because my good lady friend (not a girlfriend), lived directly behind. If I remember correctly the “Adult Content” consisted of Playboy, OUI, and Hustler. Heavy for the standards of the day. The Clerk who I forgot his name because of the high turnover became suspicious and made the call. Two Sac County Deputies did a less than professional undercover stakeout of the store. Basically being in uniform but wearing a civilian coat over their uniforms and one staying in the back room and one nearby outside the store.
The Clerk received a phone call from an individual asking “To speak to those Cops” then the Clerk called the Deputy from the back room and the content of the conversation is open to debate but nevertheless, that individual was never seen again in that store. This was a topic of conversation and critical analysis because not only was the cover blown, but magazines were not seized for prints or other detailed measures even prior to the stakeout. A lot of conjecture could be made of this incident but this individual Clerk disappeared from the radar and was also basically never heard from again. I believe his name was Mike (The Clerk) and an Army Veteran who lived very close by... if my memory serves me correct. This is one of many incidents of “Taunting” by EAR toward the Deputies in the area. Looking at porno and buying beer and calling the store is just too heavy to ignore. I like many, forgot about this until I was reminded by recent recantations by those officers involved. This incident and this Clerk, were very valuable to the investigation a lot of assumptions could be made. One of the Deputies could have been Shelby who was due for reassignment for a plethora of reasons but then again, perhaps not. EAR was thoroughly enjoying himself outwitting the cops but this 7-11 Clerk may have been the only person to ID EAR if the Sheriff had agreed it was most likely but can we not see the big picture?
