The first attack on 10-1-79 in Santa Barbara/Goleta was thwarted, so there was less MO revealed by ONS.
1) Consider if any of the EAR attacks had been thwarted at the same point in the attack, with the victim(s) running out of the house and JJD bailing and escaping. Would there be any MO difference between that EAR attack and ONS#1 - other than the repeated mumbling of "gonna kill 'em"? The MO revealed before the thwarting would seem exactly the same between an aborted EAR attack and ONS #1 to me. The dog paw prints outside would be another difference, I suppose.
2) We do know he did said "I'm gonna kill YOU" three times in a row from the EAR phone call recorded by the victim in attack #1 (were there other EAR phones calls with that repeated whether recorded or not?) Did any detective in the history of the case ever consider if "gonna kill 'em" and "I'm gonna kill you" could have been done by the same offender?
Here's an interesting VR entry from the 12-26-75 map, where there WAS another phone call where the caller repeated "I'm gonna kill you", and the police were called but thought it to be a prank, from "Early May 1974." The house was ransacked about two weeks later. Note this phone call is not mentioned anywhere in the timeline or incidents on visaliaransacker.com (I looked at all the May 1974 attacks, including those ransackings that could have been about two weeks later than early May, VR attacks #18 through #28). I'm thinking no one in Sacramento ever knew about this 1974 VR phone call, but had EAR and VR investigations cooperated, it surely would have been shared with Sac detectives:

"Kill You" Call
description
Early May, 1974. Teenaged babysitter received a phone call around 8:30 pm. Caller stated "I'm going to kill you" several times until babysitter hung up. When she picked up the phone to call the police, the caller was still on the line, and he repeated "I'm going to kill you.." She hung up the phone, locked the kids in the house, and went to the neighbor's for help. The police were called, but they felt it was a prank. The babysitter's mother came and waited until the residents returned home. The same house was ransacked about two weeks later.
