Who killed Denise Davenport 37 years ago?

I remember this case, as I was student at UNC when it happened and would love if they solved this case. It probably isn't possible to get DNA, as her body was found in the Platte River after laying there for 4 months, but I still hope they can solve it. I thought they had a suspect at one point but no evidence, but I could be wrong, but I am happy this case got some recognition after all these years. Another Colorado Cold case, I hope Denise's family gets justice one day!

DENVER (KDVR) - There are hundreds of unsolved homicide cases, long-term missing person cases, and unidentified remains cases in Colorado where at least three years have passed since the crime happened.



The Colorado cold case task force created a list of those cases dating back to 1970. The Problem Solvers are working to highlight cold cases in our state.

Who killed Denise Davenport?


The Weld County Sheriff’s Office said Denise Davenport was last seen on Feb. 24, 1985 when she left work at the Greeley Mall. She was reported missing to the Greeley Police Department.




Police said a few days later, the car Davenport was driving, her boyfriend’s blue Mazda RX-7, was found in a University of Northern Colorado parking lot near Frazer Hall.



Davenport was a student at UNC.



A few months later, on April 20, the sheriff’s office said Davenport’s body was found in the South Platte River between 18th Street and U.S. 34 near Greeley.




Foul play is suspected in Davenport’s death.

Makes me wonder if the guy wasn't involved in this case as well? Same city, only a couple years apart.

I saw the Who murdered Jonelle Matthews case on Dateline last night and Steven Pankey was convicted of her murder. I am not 100% certain it wasn't Norris Drake however. Steven Pankey certainly is crazy with mental issues and I felt he liked the attention and he did have past with some ex-girl. But Norris Drake probably knew too much and had a criminal past and a fetish for young girls.

This bring me to why I posted this in the Denise Davenport folder, Jonelle was murdered in 1984 in Greeley Colorado and Denise was murdered in 1985 in Greeley Colorado. I think either one of these guys are good candidates for both murders.

And here is why I keep Norris Drake on the radar for either or both murders, even if he has died in 2007.

ANTHONY VIORST: Norris Drake, Ladies and gentlemen, knew that the footprints were raked.

Norris Drake. Viorst claims that he is Jonelle's killer. In the years after Jonelle disappeared, Drake was arrested on multiple unrelated misdemeanor charges.

ANTHONY VIORST: Norris Drake murdered Jonelle Matthews.

Kelly Werthmann: I mean, as a reporter, you start lookin' around … tryin' to do some searching of who this person is.

Kelly Werthmann and others covering the trial had never heard the name Norris Drake before, but—unlike Pankey—Drake had been questioned by police about Jonelle's disappearance. His mother and sister lived across the street from the Matthews home, and he was at his mother's house the night Jonelle was taken.

Kelly Werthmann: There were no signs of a struggle inside the Matthews home … he could've been someone that Jonelle had either seen before … She might've willingly opened the door, let him in; might've willingly gone with him if he had said … "something happened to your family, come with me."

ANTHONY VIORST: So that's why there was no struggle, all right? Because Norris Drake got her to leave the house.

n the night Jonelle vanished, Drake was unaccounted for for several hours. But when did he go missing? Police stopped investigating him when his mother told them Drake was still with her — in her house — at the time Jonelle is believed to have disappeared.

Kelly Werthman: But it raised some significant and, I think, important questions.

And Viorst had more, based on testimony by a former girlfriend of Drake's.

ANTHONY VIORST: Norris Drake had an interest in young girls who had recently reached puberty, exactly what Jonelle was, exactly.

Norris Drake died in 2007, but many thought Viorst's theory about him helped Pankey's case. But the most talkative person in this case had yet to be heard from. Pankey himself would take the stand.

Both Denise and Jonelle were taken and dumped elsewhere, one buried on a field 20 miles away the other thrown in the Platte River miles away. 

Anyway, food for thought, on if one of these guys also Killed Denise as well!
