Seven people running sex trafficking operations out of Indianapolis have been convicted in two separate federal cases.
“Sex trafficking, particularly of children, has no place in this country,” Josh Minkler, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, said in a news release Tuesday. “Our children should be able to grow up without being offered for sale by adults who seek to profit from their vulnerability.”
In one case, 33-year-old James Young led a child and adult trafficking ring out of an east-side motel from 2013 to 2015, according to the news release. He was sentenced to 26 years in prison, a lifetime of supervised release and a restitution payment of $450,000 toward five survivors of his trafficking.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI put together their case for Young based on the story of a child he had trafficked, social media, online sex trafficking advertisements, police reports and motel records, according to the news release.
Chief Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson also sentenced Raheem Simmons to two years in prison, three years of supervised release and a restitution payment of $2,000 to one survivor for helping the sex trafficking operation by transporting a survivor to another state, the release said.
A third female defendant, whose identity the court has sealed, pleaded guilty to conspiracy in prostituting adults and minors.
In the second case, Nahtahna Garcia-Herrera was among four offenders who trafficked two teenage girls and other adults out of two houses known as “the building” and “the sugar shack” on the west side.
FBI and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigators found that the girls were being advertised online for sex acts in order to support an illegal drug business out of the two buildings.
Judge Tanya Walton-Pratt sentenced 34-year-old Garcia-Herrera to 20 years in prison for trafficking. She also sentenced Vaughn Isom to a four-year prison term and three years of supervised release for promoting prostitution and selling illegal drugs in Indiana and across state boundaries.
Tyrece Jones pleaded guilty to sex trafficking a minor and is awaiting sentence from Judge Sarah Evans Barker on Wednesday.
The last defendant, Rhonda Badger, has pleaded guilty to the same charge as Isom and is awaiting sentencing, the news release said.
"The physiological and physical damage borne by the victims of this horrific crime is truly unimaginable and heartbreaking and deserves the full attention of law enforcement," IMPD Chief Bryan Roach.
