Batman Rapist Google Map

The initial version of the Google "My Map" is complete and ready to view, made with the information provided by sammyt and ttk. This is still a work in progress so any constructive feedback is welcome. Link below. Here's a quick peek:

Key:

• All locations are very approximate. The idea is to give you a general idea of where the events occurred.
• Dark gray icons signify attacks that occurred late at night or in the very early morning.
• Icons with inner black rings signify confirmed attacks via Operation Eagle.
• Pentagon shaped icons signify attacks that originated at victims' homes.
• All routes shown are purely speculative and represent pathways that are as quick and direct as possible using major roads and highways. (Generally so.)
  
• Black lines represent routes to abduction sites.
  
• Red lines represent routes between same-day attacks.
  
• The car icon represents a near-miss collision that occurred between same-day attacks.
  
• There is an option on the left pane near the bottom to change the appearance to Satellite view, a standard My Maps feature.

The goal is to make the map as simple and as clear as possible. If there is anything that works against that please let us know. We will update as more accurate information becomes available.

Also... Click on any icon and more details of the attack or route will appear. The attacks are plotted by year. You can un-check a year on the left pane to make all the events of the year disappear. Just recheck the box to make them reappear. Those are custom icons so they can be changed. 

Whatever you do, please use the map as a case reference for the Batman Rapist.That of course is the point. It's hard look at it without speculating about details such as MO and home bases used by the perpetrator.

Brilliant work. It looks great.

It's very interesting to see the late night attacks, and home abduction attacks, mapped out.

It's also interesting to see the routes he travelled after abducting victims, and also the routes he took after failed attacks.

Attack 9 is the one Richard Prior was arrested on suspicion of.
Attack 22 is the final known attack, and takes place after Prior has been bailed.
The final attack is on the exact route the attacker uses in attack 9.

You did a really nice job on this map.  I like the house vs. car attack icons.  I like the lines showing where the victim was taken. 

I wish I had more insight into these attacks but I just don't know the area. 

I think familial DNA would solve this case if they still have the rape kits.

I think that maybe on a few occasions, he parks his own car in Sydney Road or Sydney Mews.

That looks a real parking comfort zone to me. I think his general comfort zone is slightly to the NE of Bath City centre.

Bath Pavilion (opposite Bath Cricket Ground) is another possible place he could have parked at timea. Pretty much right in the centre of the attack zone.

Why is the offender so comfortable in Bath?

Does he live there - if so how does he avoid the local enquiries?

Maybe he lives just outside the enquiry area or he travelled into bath. After the crimes he could have died or lleft the area if he llived in bath or the cops might have missed him. Look at the night stalker rapist they had his name and address and went round to his house and he wasnt in and the cops never went back

Good points.  Christopher Hampton slipped the net, even though he was an extremely close neighbour of Melanie Road in 1983.  The witness Ben (who saw Hampton that night) lived one or two doors outside the area where police conducted door to door enquiries in Bath.  For his own reasons,  Ben didn't come forward as a witness until many years later. 

Ben was the owner of the camper van mentioned in the early press reports.  Hampton was the man mentioned who was seen wearing the grey shirt.

There wasn't mass testing in the Melanie Road case though.  94 men were arrested and questioned because they matched the rare blood type.  Hampton was arrest number 95, many years later.

It shouldn't have been as easy to slip the net in the Batman case, where they had 2,000 suspects.

The 2,000 suspects weren't all from Bath, so the police were open to the idea of a commuter offender.

However, it seems they suspect it most likely that the Batman was a marauder offender (living in Bath).

The reasoning would be that the Batman generally avoids showing his face (perhaps worried about being recognised) and attacks in a few parts of Bath (commuter offenders usually have a smaller target area to offend in). He also has a local accent, avoids CCTV and seems to know Bath very well.

If he is a Bath local, then he's quite possibly unknown to the investigation, with no criminal record (or at least no record prior to the mid 90s when DNA started being taken for minor arrests).
