I watch a lot of Youtube videos and the app. likes to serve up obscure videos on topics I watch. This video called "Nodan Katas" came up and I have to say that this is the weirdest thing I have ever seen!

It's supposed to be a parody, but no one is laughing. The other guys in the video look like they don't want to be there, and the production is low budget with synthesizer music. I looked up the rest of the videos and downloaded his "free book.". My first red flag is that he offered a free book. And yes, it is the creepiest thing I have ever read. I won't spoil it for you, but frankly, it could have easily been written by a karate-master serial killer. Chilling! Take away lesson: Remember people never use a Ouija board in a dojo!!!!!

Does anyone recognize these people? From what I read, it was pretty hippy-like. Hippies and karate mixed in California. Is this your dojo? If so, what is up with this guy?

After a particularly difficult break of no fewer than five boards, Nodan tells a cautionary tale: "Now listen carefully please. Nodan is using only his own natural strength to do these breaking demonstrations. But beware. It is possible through occult practices to channel other spiritual powers, which by comparison make Nodan's breaking mere child's play. "

Does anyone no anything about a man that calls himself "Nodan" and that sends DVDs unsolicited to various dojo? A friend of mine just got such a DVD at his dojo. He was looking for some more context and/or background -- since nothing at all came with the DVD.

I don't know who this guy is or what its all about, but several dojos in Arizona have recieved the nodan DVD in the mail unsolicited. And I agree that it is quite insane but at the same time he has some skill and some valid things to say, but its still insane and what is up with his partner that growls as he swings the knife?

We received a copy of Nodan's video at my dojo. We watched it after our New Year's Eve training session over a couple of glasses of sake. It was truly hilarious, especially when his "uke" with the pirate patch over his eye steps on the mat to help him out. It was really weird how we received the video completely unsolicited, and in fact their was no return address and the postage hadn't even been marked so it couldn't be used again

I received this same inexplicable NoDan tape way up here in Vermont. I have been vainly trying to figure out which one of my weird friends sent this to me (I thought I had it narrowed down, actually). Now I discover, via this thread that this mysterious mailing is a widespread phenomenon. The tape is a oddball combination of evident skill and goofy presentation. It has become a cult classic in my house where the teenagers gather to watch it periodically and then spend the rest of the day talking in the same unaccountable stage accent. The part where his glasses fly off and he changes from martial arts master to doddering fogey is my favorite. I also have to admit that the accent is fun to do and is useful for annoying my students. , I believe the return address was somewhere in the Boston, MA area which was how I was pinpointing certain warped acquaintances of mine.

We've been playing it after class at the dojo, every time someone shows up who hasn't seen it, but we still don't know what to think about it. Joke? Serious? Ahh Nodan how I miss thee. We got that video like 5 yrs ago. Its absolutely hysterical. My favorite part is when he punches the makiwara board and his glasses fall off and he turns and says something like ohhhhhhhhh. Its a riot. For weeks after, while teaching I some how always through in the Nodan voice in at one point when someone asked a question.

With the help of Albion's post regarding cults that practice martial arts (Synanon, Santa Monica, CA), I researched this group and was able to find that they both used Ouija boards and practiced karate, and threatened ex-members.

At 4 a.m., the room was dim and set up with candles and incense. The stage was draped in black with a table and two chairs for the women who were good at the Ouija board. They wore white robes and black loops. There were scribes with legal pads to transcribe the session, usually a secretary who could either write very fast or take shorthand. The sessions began by asking if there was a spirit in the room. After there was an answer, we asked if there was a message for anyone. The answers were many, with surprisingly applicable lessons. Many boards were worn out from the sessions as the glass moved so fast with Lena and Susan on the board that the letters came up to 40 words a minute.

Phil Ritter was disturbed by the mass sterilization. When he spoke against it in a Game, he told me, “The general reaction was, ‘If you don’t want to do it, pack your bags.’” He went to the Marin County sheriff’s office, thinking, “Surely there had to be a law against that sort of thing.” There wasn’t. The next big rule was handed down after Betty died in 1977. Dederich, who was 64, wanted to remarry. “I sent up a flare, like any monarch of old times would have done,” he told reporters. “I let the word out I was available.” Of the six women who applied for the opening, Dederich chose Ginny Schoren, a 31-year-old teacher at one of Synanon’s schools. Shortly thereafter, Dederich decided that marriage should no longer be permanent; couples were told to split up and form new, three-year-long “love matches.” Within days, 230 couples had filed for divorce. Among the people filing was Ritter’s wife. Making matters worse, Synanon was restricting how often Ritter could visit their three-year-old daughter. He filed a motion to be allowed to see her more.



One day as Ritter was returning home from the supermarket, two young men approached him. Without saying a word, they beat him with wooden mallets, leaving him on the ground, bleeding, with a fractured skull. They didn’t even take his wallet. The attack was among at least 18 that the California attorney general’s office eventually linked to Synanon.

In my first year in S, starting in June 1965, I lived everywhere. I entered through the Westport, Conn. facility and after I had my hair cut and made my newly assigned bed, I was informed that I was leaving for San Francisco, to a facility called the Seawall. I spent 2 months there and in August, I was ‘rotated’ up to Tomales Bay in mid-August. Being a NYC boy, it was tough being up there with all that greenery and blue skies and I felt kind of trapped but 3 months later I was rotated to Reno, NV. Charlie hamer was the Director and we had some fun there. Frankie Lago became the director in December and in January of 1966 He rotated me to Santa Monica on a greyhound bus. When I arrived, no one knew I was coming so I had to explain to Louie Caradino on the phone where I was and that I needed to be picked up at the SM greyhound terminal.. So at this point, I had been to all of our facilities except San Diego. 3 months later, I was rotated to SD, where I stayed for more than two years. So in 46 weeks I had lived in every facility we had at that time although I didn’t get to sleep at the West[prt facility. Since its shoestring beginning in an Ocean Park, Calif., garage, Synanon has done very well by itself. The taxexempt, nonprofit organization has 883 adults and 300 children living in luxury on two ranches in the Sierra foothills, beach-front property in Santa Monica and Tomales Bay and in a converted San Francisco paint factory. Most members pay a minimum $400 a month for room, board and uplift, but some contribute much more. One woman has donated more than $1 million. Synanon's assets, including ten aircraft and 400 cars, trucks and motorcycles, total almost $30 million. Its advertising and specialty-gifts business netted $2.4 million last year; donations and other income amounted to another $5.5 million. Dederich draws an annual salary of $100,000 and pays his top corporate officers from $30,000 to $50,000. "A lot of guys could do this thing from an old Ford roadster and sit on an orange crate," he says, while munching on powdered lettuce from a silver bowl. "They're holy men; I'm not. I need a $17,000 Cadillac. We are in the people business just exactly as if we were building Chevrolet axles."

The camp developed a routine. They ran the obstacle courses and climbed rope. Push-ups were ordered for mistakes. The Marine recruits did martial arts contact drill with one guy throwing punches and the other blocking. They learned an 8-point blocking system. They built muscle by pumping heavy rocks, improvising ala Rocky. They marched and Wendell Stamps taught them some counter columns and other squadron moves. Each was given KP duties. Only the Wire located near the camp connected them to the community. Equipment included hatchets, firearms and aluminum lockers to be filled with munitions easily thrown on the back of pickup trucks. Musico designed an Imperial Marine shoulder patch. Dederich boasted that in one year’s time they would have a force of 200 Marines who could be “very dangerous.”

On June 5, Musico asked after camp was over to stay on at the Strip to teach future Marines and assist in providing emergency responses. At Think Table Dederich talked of his sheer delight at having Big Mooks like Bob Richardson and Bob Pitzle accompany him as bodyguards when he travels all over the Valley especially during this period when they were fighting the “ungodly.”



Surprise came on June 9th, when Carl Anderson copped out in a stew that he really had not remained in the Marines more than four years and had exaggerated his combat experience. He realized he would have to repent and clean up his mess.



On June 13, 1977 it was decided that the Imperial Marines would help teach doctors martial arts. Joe Musico proposed to the Board that at its June 26 meeting it reconsider the idea of an additional Synanon National Guard and place him in charge of training it. He feared that Marines otherwise would have to work with untrained and undisciplined team members when executing a security maneuver. In four months he said he could train a 120 men and women in 80% of the security classes. Lance Kenton and Wendell Stamps proposed they be in charge of putting 16-to-18-year-old boys through a ninety-day training similar to that of the Marines. They signed their proposal “Yours for Marine expansion.” A plan to teach martial arts to the entire community was signed “Alan Hubbard and Ivan Ujueta, For the Synanon Imperial Marines.” They said they could train 600 people in one year to the level of competency of the Marines.

The board accepted all three proposals and stated everyone must learn the same uniform style of martial arts, basic enough so that all could participate and achieve excellence. Later it was named Syndo and teaching it became Ivan Ujueta’s full-time job. In the do Jo and out of the do Jo became the new dichotomy. Ivan Ujueta is the Kyoshi of the Professional Karate Institute, PKI, and the founder of the style of Ju Ki Do mixed martial arts. His study in the martial arts spans over 40 years. His training began at age 13, at the Japanese Kodokan Dojo in Queens, New York, encompassing the styles of Judo, Jujutsu, and Aikido. At age 14, in Manhattan, NY, he studied Nisei Goju Karate, a formidable system of five styles, founded by Grandmaster Frank Ruiz, under Grandmaster Chaka Zulu. At the age of 17, he moved to California where he studied Shaolin Kung Fu (the study of 18 ancient weapons).



He has studied and taught the following styles: Five Animal Shaolin Kung Fu with primary emphasis on Wing Chun, the Art of Naked Kill (utilizing over 250 household items transforming them into lethal weapons of self-defense), Kyokushin Karate (meaning “ultimate truth in combat”) founded by the late master Oyama and known as the only man to ever fight a bull barehanded, Kenpo, Okinawa Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Tai Chi Chuan, and Brazilian Jiujitsu



For 11 years, Mr. Ujueta lived out of the realm of society, as a Zen Buddhist monk while studying and instructing in California. During this time, he trained for one year with veteran Special Forces learning practical hand-to-hand combat. This experience, along with his studies in the various styles, gave him the opportunity to work as a bodyguard for many VIPs and high profile dignitaries.



From all of his experiences, he developed Ju Ki Do, which means the “Gentle Powerful Way”. Ju Ki Do is centered on three major principles: the moral law, the laws of physics, and the spiritual laws. His personal conviction is that every style offers something, yet limits one to a style that restricts the mind, body, and spirit from reaching its full potential. He calls Ju Ki Do “The Master’s Blend”, because it brings together the best of all styles. Under the supervision of Professor Bruno Azevedo and his Professor Luis Sergio “Marra” Correa, the style of Brazilian Jujitsu was also added to Ju Ki Do.



In 1984, Mr. Ujueta accepted Christ as Lord. His new relationship with Jesus gave him a new vision. In 1988, he established PKI with the concept of “building champions” in the home and community. In 1989, he was officially ordained as a Pastor. Christianity transformed him into a ‘godly’ warrior.



He currently teaches at PKI in the Ju Ki Do style and is the Pastor of the Homeplace Fellowship in Helotes, TX. He is married, has five children, and nine grandchildren. He is living the “Gentle Powerful Way” and is helping others do the same thing.
