From the press conference on Sunday, they said that there was no sexual assault which if it was a obsessed stranger attack, I think that is odd.  I also think that no sexual assault would tend to indicate it was not some random rapist or felon that targeted the girls. 

Nothing of value was stolen so burglary seems not to be a  motive. 

Kaylee, apparently, had moved out recently and was back visiting for the day.  She had broken up with her long time boyfriend but she was still friendly with him and he was the one that Kaylee and Maddie had called shortly before they were killed after they got home from the food truck.  Reports are that he did not answer his phone because he was asleep.

Maddie and Kaylee got a ride home from the food truck from a friend and bolted from the food truck to that car so it is unlikely that some random guy that had seen them at the bar or the food truck would have been able to follow them, unless they knew their names and where they lived, which is possible. 

The combination of circumstance in this case is making it very odd.  I hope that they are just methodically going through all those blood samples and other evidence and will id the killer soon. 

On Monday, police said a dog was also found at the home. “The dog was unharmed and turned over to Animal Services and then released to a responsible party.” Moscow Police said in a Facebook post.   


So the dog never barked and alerted the house to a possible intruder??   Was the killer someone the dog was familiar with?

So the dog was a golden doodle and pretty young they arent known for their guarding instinct.

Also as someone noted in a different forum they seemed to have plenty of people in and out so he would be well socialized.

Doesnt mean he didnt know the killer, just some alternative thoughts on why he didnt alert.

Yeah. Different breeds of dogs have much different alert skills. Still, I'd just assumed the dog was with one of the first-floor roommates when all of this happened. But, apparently, it was Kaylee's pet, and is now in her boyfriend's care.

Most dogs that are pets don't attack burglars.  Dogs mostly are looking for someone to give them attention, treats and play with them when their owner is not home.  Most dogs that are pets see all people are friends.  They may bark but will calm down once the person enters the house and greets the dog. 

I have to wonder if they swabbed the dog for possible touch DNA since it is very likely the dog touched the killer if the dog was loose in the house. 

There was a story posted in a tabloid about a miniature Australian Sheppard that was killed October 21 about three miles away from the Moscow murder house.  That pup was described as having been skinned and disemboweled leaving only hair on the feet and face of the dog.  The dog was taken from the owners rural yard and a neighbor found it the next day.  The owner also described the dog as having been filleted like someone was planning on eating it.

I have no idea if the Moscow murders and this dog mutilation are related but it certainly raises some eyebrows.  The dog incident was north  of Moscow  out at the very edge of town near where the roads end in farmland then to national forest.   The house is visible through some trees  from an eight acre city park across a farm field and up a hill to the west.

Just saw the report about the dog being skinned, obviously someone with a severe mental illness would do such a thing.  It may be connected to the murders, as killing an animal may have held the killers urges at bay for a short period of time or he used the animal killing as a way to build up his courage before killing humans?

I only mention this because everyone is still a suspect in these murders.  I'm not pointing fingers, just making an observation.  IMO Kaylee was the intended target, Jack may have been her unknown "stalker" trying to torment her while they took a break from dating.  He may have seen the other murder victims as being supportive and or helping Kaylee move away from him?  The crime scene being described as "messy", possibly points to a crime of passion & overkill by an inexperienced killer?  he'd been in the house many times and any evidence of DNA found cant prove he was the killer.

How far away from the murder scene did the boyfriend live?   Jack knew the layout of the house and he shared the dog with Kaylee.  It has been reported that Jack was asleep and this is why he didnt hear his phone ringing, but maybe he left his phone at home while he was possibly out of the house that night?  Why was Madison involved in also calling "Jack"?  Maybe the reason why Kaylee/Madison called "Jack" was their way of leaving a bread crumb about the identity of the killer?? 

Or did he contact them sometime early that morning and give a sad story that he missed Kaylee and was going to hurt himself and this is why both Kaylee & Madison are calling him so many times, maybe they wanted to talk to him and calm him down?  This is the only reason I can come up with as to explain why his ex and her friend were trying to call him, seemingly frantically in the middle of the night, and not just waiting until later in the morning or day, this was something urgent for them to be calling him at this moment.  He wasnt answering Kaylee so Madison tried calling him.  You wouldnt want to talk down someone whos distraught in a text, you would want to talk to them on the phone.

I live next door to a Golden Doodle since it was a puppy and it has always barked at me and my adult children even though the dog is very familiar with us.  Maybe a Golden Doodle isnt known for it's "guarding instinct", but it definately barks at people it is familiar with, although each dog is different depending on how they were raised/trained.

As for the calls many theories abound but it appears that "Jack" was called and VMs left by Kaylee and Madison. From the food truck video you can see that they were pretty housed so was it drunk dialing,booty call,looking for the dog, at this point everything is a WAG.

Unless they know who committed the mutilation and have proof where they were during the murders, I don't know how they can be certain they are not related.

Today's press conference revisited the details that have been posted as facts on the Moscow Police Department's web page. They mentioned that they were aware of rumors that Kaylee had talked about having a stalker to friends but they have not been able to confirm the existence of a stalker.

MPD also said that they do not believe that Kaylee's ex, Jack, is involved.

MPD was asking for more tips, even little tips. It sounds like they don't have a good suspect, sadly.

I'll continue to hope that the killer left DNA or other evidence that can id him.

Investigators are exploring the possibility that the quadruple murders of four University of Idaho students may be connected to a 2021 unsolved stabbing murder 400 miles away in Oregon.


Back on 13 August 2021, a couple was attacked in their home in Salem, Oregon, by a masked assailant who broke in armed with a knife, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said at the time.

Travis Juetten, 26, and Jamilyn Juetten, 24, were woken at around 3am in the morning when the mystery attacker entered their bedroom and stabbed them both multiple times.

Mr Juetten tried to fight off the attacker but was stabbed to death. Ms Juetten was stabbed 19 times in the attack but miraculously survived.

Despite the victims’ families putting up a $50,000 reward for information leading to the killer, more than one year on, the case remains unsolved.

Similarities are now being drawn between the stabbings and the slayings of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, in Moscow, Idaho.

Both unsolved cases involve a suspect armed with a knife breaking into a home at around 3am and attacking victims while they slept in their beds.

Also in both cases, other people were home at the time of the killings and were unharmed.

At the time of the Oregon stabbings, a friend was sleeping in another room as they were going to cat-sit for the couple as they had a trip to Hawaii planned for the next day.

The friend was woken by the commotion and is believed to have scared off the attacker, before calling 911, reported KOIN6.Similarly, two other roommates were in the home at the time of the murders in Idaho. They were unharmed and are believed to have slept through the attack.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Moscow police confirmed that they were aware of the Oregon incident and were “looking into any possible connection” between the crimes.

“We’re looking at every avenue and we have other agencies reaching out to us with other cases and stuff that we are going to follow up on,” said Moscow Police Chief James Fry.

He added that he had received a tip linking the two cases.

“I actually had a tip come in on that case and I forwarded it,” he said.

The possible connection comes as – 11 days on from the quadruple murder – no suspects have been named and no arrests made.

Officials gave few new details about the case in Wednesday’s press conference, refusing to say why they believe the murders were targeted – instead simply telling the terrified community to “trust us”.

Police reiterated that the two surviving housemates, the man who was caught on camera with Mogen and Goncalves at a food truck in the downtown area before they headed home on the night of the slayings, the person who gave Mogen and Goncalves a ride home from the food truck and Goncalves’ former long-term boyfriend have all been ruled out as suspects.

They also revealed that they had been unable to confirm reports that Goncalves had a stalker – but were also unable to rule it out.

The four victims were stabbed to death in the off-campus home that the three women shared with two roommates in the early hours of the morning of 13 November.

Goncalves and Mogen had spent Saturday night at The Corner Club bar in downtown Moscow, before stopping by a food truck and then getting a ride home from an unnamed “private party”. Kernodle and Chapin were at a sorority party at Sigma Chi house together.

All four victims are believed to have returned to the student home at around 1.45am.

Multiple calls were then made from the phones of Goncalves and Mogen to the phone of Goncalves’ former longtime boyfriend between 2.26am and 2.52am. None of the calls were answered.

The time of death of the victims is believed to be around 3am or 4am, officials said last week.

Two victims were killed on the second floor and two on the third floor of the home. The two surviving roommates were sleeping on the first floor and were unharmed.

The horrific crime scene went unnoticed for several more hours, with police receiving a 911 call at 11.58am on Sunday, reporting an “unconscious individual” at the home.

Police arrived to find the four victims dead.

The coroner has revealed that all four victims were stabbed multiple times with a large knife while in their beds. There was no signs of sexual assault on any of the victims and the murder weapon – a fixed-blade knife – has not been recovered.

I know there’s a lot of discussion in social media in which friends of the girls are being accused of committing the crime.
It’s certainly possible. But I know of a similar case a few years ago that was a random crime, where 2 grad students near Boston were stabbed. It was completely random. They found the guy only a few hours later because he tried to steal a car not too far away and the police noted he was covered in blood. What the stories don’t report is that there was a third roommate that was present that was completely unharmed ( bedroom was on another floor) and a fourth roommate that was away visiting family that night. Of those that were attacked, one very easily could have died, needing multiple surgeries to repair the damage done in just a few short minutes on that night.
I am acquainted with one of the roommates . If the police hadn’t caught the guy right away , given the speculation around the Idaho attacks , I could image people accusing the roommate that was unharmed of the attack. Why wasn’t she hurt , was she involved? Or accusing the roommate that was away because she must have known it was going to happen. No and No.
It was a random attack.
None of this means that the attack in Idaho was random, just that such attacks can occur.
