Good morning!
It is our 5 year Capture Anniversary!!
You may not have realized it, but April 24, 2023 marks 5 years since the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer was apprehended!
What an amazing day in history.
You already know my story. From July 27, 1981 through 2001, I believed the monster who murdered my Mom, Cheri Domingo,
and her boyfriend, Greg Sanchez, would never be identified or punished. But from 2001 through April 24, 2018, I learned as much as I could, and did everything I could think of to help publicize the revitalized and ongoing hunt for the killer. We have the miracle of DNA science, and the diligence of pioneers using Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy to thank. But there are hundreds more who deserve our gratitude. Maybe even thousands.
You are one of them!
It took more than 2 years for all of the legal matters to be sorted out and DeAngelo to be sent to prison. After sentencing was complete, I really didn’t know what to do with myself. My mission had been accomplished. My quest for justice, achieved.
Now, I’m finally starting to find my bearings. Part of me wants to sit back alongside my new husband and retire in peace. But there is still
a piece of me that wants to continue to be helpful. So, don’t be surprised if you see me in public from time to time; Sharing stories of those
who fought so hard to bring the GSK to justice. Encouraging other survivors and spreading hope. Rallying for EVERYONE to contribute
their DNA profiles to GEDmatch.com and Opt-In for Law Enforcement. (It is the future of crime solving!)
These are the things that help me stay engaged and continue to give me purpose.
On a personal note, if you are a recipient of this letter, then you have played some part in my Journey for Justice. I want to thank you.
Whatever your role;
Maybe you were an original patrolman or investigator, or possibly one assigned to the case decades later.
Maybe you’re a citizen who got in your personal vehicle with your scanner or CB radio, trying to catch the guy in action.
Maybe you’re a prosecutor or defense attorney, or you work in their offices, or for Victims’ Services.
You might be a media correspondent, journalist, producer, make up artist, camera operator, light or sound technician, editor, publicist
Book author
Magazine or newspaper reporter
Print editor, publisher or distributor
Photographer or sketch artist
YouTube content creator
Genealogy enthusiast/family tree builder
Blogger
Podcaster
Maybe you are a participant in the online sleuthing community, member of ProBoards, Reddit, etc.
You may be a CrimeCon creator, staff member, volunteer or attendee.
Maybe you plotted all of the attack locations on a map.
Maybe you submitted a tip or the name of a person of interest.
Maybe you have been a silent victim, cheering us on from the darkness.
You might be an avid true crime documentary watcher.
Maybe you blasted news of the search for the killer on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram feeds or YouTube channels.
Maybe you prayed the monster would be caught. Or sent us positive thoughts or good vibes. (It worked!)
Maybe you went to a library and tracked down old articles on microfiche
Or you searched telephone books and high school yearbooks for some shred of a connection.
Perhaps you are a nurse who conducted rape kits on some of the dozens of victims.
Maybe you’re a pathologist, lab technician, or an evidence room custodian.
Maybe you’re a realtor who had to sell a house where a crime was committed.
You may have contributed financially to help me get to conferences and court proceedings.
Maybe you created bumper stickers or magnets or fliers.
Maybe you set up chairs or nametags or cleaned the restrooms at Sac State University.
Maybe you are a bailiff, court reporter or clerk.
Maybe you are a Correctional Officer, keeping custody of “DeDevil” for the rest of his rotten life.
Maybe you were my Uber or Lyft driver while I was traveling.
Perhaps you didn’t even know me, but you let me sleep at your house!
You might be a fellow victim or survivor.
Maybe you’re a counselor who helped some of us try to make sense of the madness.
Maybe you helped write a Victim Impact Statement.
Maybe you were a friend to my Mom or Greg.
You could simply be my family member or friend. Or my FaceBook friend!
Whatever role you have played in this enormous story, you have my undying gratitude.
Thank you for caring. I consider it a blessing that our paths crossed. I hope you’ll stay in touch.
Much love and best wishes,
Debbi Domingo Massei
P.S. Five years is a big deal! Don’t forget to celebrate with a delicious pot roast! (If you don’t know that story, ask me!)
Also, if you haven’t already, RUN YOUR DNA, UPLOAD TO GEDMATCH.com and be sure to OPT-IN for Law Enforcement. Thanks!
Oh, one more thing. Feel free to forward this to others whose contact info I couldn’t find!
