I didn't really know that many of Manson's victims were involved in the LA drug culture, unless that's a fact of being involved with Hollywood.

Probably so. I specifically used the term "drug culture" rather than "drug trade" because I don't want to imply more than the evidence indicates. Several of the victims were part of a part of a Hollywood culture that partied hard and, as a result, had contacts with some unsavory people. (www.cielodrive.com/archive/?p=632) But none of that was relevent to their murders. The point being that it was important to investigate that angle, but once the Manson lead became evident, the other line of investigation became moot. Likewise, I believe that this Maverick Air lead looked possibly promising, but now that it has been established that the crime was committed by the same person who was the DNA donor at the other confirmed crimes, it seems the Maverick Air lead is much less likely.

Based on all of the above information, I can definitely see that the Smiths may have been killed because of their ties to Maverick Air, but the question is: Was the killer EAR/ONS or was EAR/ONS "framed" by someone else trying to cover up their crime.

Do we know if this crime is linked by DNA to the other crimes, or is the link based on similar M.O.? If merely M.O., then it may be incorrectly linked to the other crimes. If linked by solid DNA evidence, then I suspect that the Maverick Air "connections" are merely coincidences and red herrings.

The late 1970's and the 1980's saw a lot of hinkiness involving spooks and shady doings by business people/organized crime - the lines were definitely blurred. But the question becomes: Would a lone wolf like EAR/ONS find himself in the intelligence/mafia nexus for this line of questioning to be true? Or was ONS an easy person to falsly frame to cover up other criminals' involvement?

When Shelby and I spoke about the errors, he seemed a bit embarrassed. I explained that proofing a written piece is difficult - especially if you are the author. Your mind automatically corrects errors so you don't see them and they are easily missed. I am glad he got the chance for a "mulligan".

Concerning shoe sizes: I remember my shoe size by the fact that I bought a pair of ski boots in 1989 (10.5) that I outgrew in a couple of years (now a 13). I still have the boots, hoping against hope that my feet will shrink and I can wear them again.

I actually had that info for my favorite POI (who has since been eliminated by DNA). His name came up in a conversation at a bar frequented by my POI. One of the women sitting there perked up and said, "Do you mean 'Little Dick'?" As I pulled myself up off of the floor, she explained that a different woman who frequented the bar had gone home with the POI and was going to have sex with him until he dropped trou and exposed his shortcomings. After laughing in his face, she called off the whole affair.

I guess my point is: Don't assume that this info cannot be uncovered - it may be, if researchers keep their ears open to conversations going on around them.

Concerning foot size: I reached my final height of 5"-8" (dammit!) during high school (1975 and earlier) and had a shoe size of 10/10.5. I was still at that size 14 years later. Since then, my size has went from there to a size 13 between ages 32 and 56. Some may be attributed to weight gain, but, at least in my case, foot growth continued well into adulthood and middle-age.

Concerning DNA ancestory: With so much migration in Europe due to wars. stc., I wouldn't put too much stock in "origins" - look at the history of the Jews and the diaspora to see how someone who tests "Isreali" can be from anywhere in the world.
