Rader said things that may help to understand a mind set in EAR's territory, meaning near but not right on.
When Rader was asked about the breaks in between attacks, he stated he was raising his children 2 boys and a girl. and could not get away without his wife being suspicious.
Rader had items he had taken from his victims and when he would hold these objects, he would relive the actual attack and masturbate or play the imagines in his mind looping the imagines over and over. He stated it was like a movie in his mind and he would re-play it and play the parts he liked the best. This also helped him during the cooling off periods when he was unable to attack another victim.
Rader parked his car close and walked to the victim's home.
Rader called looking for a victim trolling, he would drive around an area until he saw something he liked, sometimes just a women walking into her home would be enough. He said trolling could take days or months or years, then when you look in on a target you stalk them.
Rader checked the mailbox for name of his target.
Rader would call his victims on the telephone a few times.
Rader stated he thinks about the victim, laying in bed at night thinking about what he would do to them over and over, putting them in a loop and watch it as a movie in the mind. "Once they become a fantasy, nothing will stop it from happening" stated Rader.
Rader referred to his victim's as "Projects", He would start a new "project" when he located a victim he was interested in attacking. He gave them code names as well, like one was called "project green" and he would research them and learn as much as he could, keeping notes.
He carried what he called a "Hit Kit" which was a bag with ropes, tape and gun.
Rader told victims, He needed their car or needed money or whatever he thought would get them to do whatever he wanted.
Rader always carried two guns, if one did not work he could use the other.
