From memory, Mcgowen and the other detective came down and met with Shelby. Then they went on to Davis to check out this POI. Mcgowen could not ID the guy for certain and appeared torn on whether it was the guy who shot at him. Shelby was certain that this POI could not have been EAR as he was pudgy with elephantine legs and calves (much bigger than the "thick and well developed legs" reported for EAR) apparently Shelby thought that Mcgowen and other detective had their man but just couldn't make a decision to arrest him. I will say that Shelby is a quite an arrogant cowson from what I have read.

P.S. If f1guyus has quit then I am *ed. There is plenty of blame to go around for the current environment, if in fact that is the reason.

Others may have a different story, but my communications with Shelby (both by email and phone) have proven him to be sharp without any hint of "senility'. Is his memory 100%? - of course not, but neither is mine and I am twenty years younger than him.

He is pretty up front in the book about it as well. There are things he can't remember and things he would need to look at in the files (which he isn't allowed) in order to remember.

Shelby and McGowen were very clear in their records (also other Visalia LE records) on a primary person that had moved from Visalia to the Sac area that they thought was probably the person that had turned into EAR, the rapist. They both suspected others were involved in some of the crimes and some of those people had different physical characteristics.

They both had lists of POIs that they were responsible for investigating and clearing, as did most of the Visalia investigators. I can appreciate the difference in opinions, but that is Shelby's claim and recollection, which may or may not be accurate. Thank you for sharing what he wrote.

I finished reading the book last night. It's got some pretty good information in there. Shelby isn't shy with his opinions or criticisms. Paint evidence, Maggiore's, Visalia Ransacker, and possible victim connections are all things he weighs in on. I learned some things that I didn't know. An interesting incident involving the old board (I think) is mentioned as well.

Carlo's wife says this, she says that ... and posters here believe her? How many wives and girlfriends have claimed that their husbands or boyfriends were the EAR/ONS. And how many times do these claims prove to be false. What makes Carlo's wife any more credible?

And if this Carlo person is such a great suspect what exactly is the excuse now for LE not doing anything about him?

How can posters here take such a nonchalant viewpoint to the failure of LE to arrest this Carlo person, when they are so passionate that the EAR/ONS be captured?

I suspect that posters are being unduly influenced by what Shelby says, in deference to an institution that failed to solve this series of crimes, not realizing that perhaps Shelby's reference to "Carlo" is nothing but a clever diversion from authentic pois.

Not to be unduly influenced by Mr. Shelby but does someone know when or if an eBook version might be coming out?? I'm sure this is a common question. I remember Dengas advising that it might be a significant amount of time after the release of the print versions but I haven't seen anything on Amazon or Book Locker as of yet and I'm know that I'm not the only one holding out. Dengas??

Det. Shelby says big meeting was held on this guy in 1993, some follow-up done, but he really leaves it uncertain if "Carlos" was ever cleared. Hope I haven't muddled this summary too badly, and if you have already had extensive threads on "Carlos" I apologize. I have only had time to follow the forum in fits and starts. Oh, Carlos was a meter reader for the utility company for some time. If not excluded in recent times, I would put him high on the list.

Interesting POI. Interesting too that he emigrated from Germany as some victims have claimed that EAR had/put on a German accent. I don't buy EAR's ability to cut in on phone lines without proof. In the first attack EAR made an attempt to cut the phone line from outside and failed miserably. After that he disabled phones from inside the homes by butting the cord or ripping them out of the wall. True he may have adapted his MO and learned to cut in on phone lines but if so, why did he never cut the lines from outside when he attacked? EAR was, for the most part, very careful and methodical. If he had the ability to cut in on phone lines then he would have had the ability to cut them dead from outside before he attacked which would have been the safer option for him.

Just finished the book.a great read.it confirmed a few things for me but also opened a whole new can of worms.the phone call in 92-93 is still sketchy as wasnt backed up with any conviction in the book.still believe this guys name is in the files somewhere,hope someone can dig up the original reports shelby and others handed back

This is an excellent question. In Shelby's book he mentions a POI born in Germany and raised in Brazil. I have relatives in Brazil...circumcision is very, very rare there. 

Also, do we actually know whether or not the EAR was circumcised? My impression has always been that he was but I cannot recall assimilating any specific information indicating that he was or he wasn't.
