Uppers were all the rage in baseball in the 60’s, Roger Maris was hooked I read, of course Coke in 70’s and 80’s (Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, et al, Adderall in the late 90’s and into the 2000’s, Adderall is banned of course in NFL, Olympics, etc. JJD has speed freak, coke head written all over him. Plus CNS stimulants kinda help with sleep deprivation. I’m sure he smoked marijuana, drank, popped uppers, no doubt. Never had an inmate that was a serial criminal and clean & sober while offending. 

My personal hunch is that he was not an addict.  I don't see anything to show that he was, actually quite the contrary.  As a red herring he pretended to be an addict, making statements that he needed a fix, shaking that the victims could tell was fake.  He stole drugs only for LE to find them tossed out in a neighbor's yard.  So that indicates to me he was not an addict.  He seemed to be a beer drinker, but I don't see evidence he was a habitual drunk.   I don't know how he could live with himself without being an addict or alcoholic yet I don't think he was. 

Was he a sociopath, a psychopath or was he just psychologically damaged by things in his early childhood?  He was known to scream and yell and usually at himself, does that mean he hated himself for what he did?   His co-worker said he worked years after he could have retired to pay for his children's education (not sure if that is true, I've heard it is then I heard it isn't).  He had his daughter and granddaughter living with him and he put extra locks on that little building in his back yard to protect his granddaughter.  So does a Sociopath or Psychopath care about anybody? Do they even care for their own families?  Dennis Rader the BTK thought he would have to kill his wife when he thought she may have seen his stash of momentos.  Luckily for her she didn't.  Would he have killed his own daughter if she had seen them? 


I wish there would be a trial (which I'm afraid we are never going to see) where maybe we could get more info into his childhood and hear from people to get more information.   Bonnie's revelations were very enlightening.  What a smart woman.  Her integrity saved her.  Did she ever dodge a bullet.

Potentially, he was an alcoholic. He may have been an addict in the clinical sense, but I don't think he was addicted to illicit drugs. Maybe stimulants, even coffee. Definitely seems to have been an act to sidetrack investigators.
