Hello everyone,
I am a new member to the board, though not exactly a newcomer to this case. I'm certainly not the expert that many of you have become through hours of meticulous research, but I am a trained researcher and going through the original sources has been something of an eye-opener for me. This is going to be a fairly long post, because I want to briefly lay out my own observations about this offender before I get to the point of the thread - the appalling fact that this offender was probably caught before he officially became the EAR, but police practice led to the name of the perp and the evidence against him being misplaced or discarded by the time investigators made the connection years later. Thus, it is very possible that the terrible crimes of this scumbag could have been avoided completely if police had done things differently.
Many people interested in the EARONS seem to have two common views about this offender, which are very widespread on boards like this. The first common trait of many people interested in this case is the interest they have in seeing the "development" of a serial killer as he moves from ransacking/peeping, to prowling/raping lone women, to raping women when a man is present, to his final incarnation as a serial killer who targets couples. This case is truly unique in this sense, giving law enforcement and web sleuths like ourselves the ability to see how an offender evolves and matures; how his fantasies develop and his crimes escalate along with those fantasies. In some ways he mirrors a local offender near my hometown, who I'm sure most of you are familiar with - Col. Russell Williams, who also ransacked the homes and cottages of his neighbors, stealing lingerie and jewelry, then posing in the stolen items and photographing himself. The titillation Col. Williams admits to feeling as he was able to wander and rummage unimpeded through the homes of women was enough to keep him going for a while, just as we might assume the Visalia Ransacker was also satiated by a similar feeling of invading the privacy of a woman and being able to take from her whatever he liked for later "use." This ability to wander and rummage unimpeded through the personal and private space of a person must certainly give the offender a sense of power, and we know that power is what the VR/EAR/ONS and other serial rapists and killers crave more than anything else.
Like Williams, the VR must have eventually grown bored with the feeling of power that ransacking gave him, and the idea of committing a rape inside a woman's home was the next logical step of his fantasies. We can see through his ransacking behavior that he gets a kick out of being in a person's home with the power to do whatever he wants; naturally, his rapes would not be Paul Bernardo or Gary Ridgeway style (grabbing women off the street), because for the VR/EAR, the thrill of being in a stranger's house and having complete power over them is what really seemed to get him off. In this way, the MO of the EAR was predictable if he is also the VR (and I do believe he is after reading all the original newspaper clippings).
Going back to Col. Williams, he too tired of ransacking and peeping, and eventually graduated to murder. We know he did commit some sexual assaults before he started murdering, because victims have come forward. However, he was not nearly as prolific as the EAR/ONS, and seems to have moved from ransacking to murder much quicker than the EAR. Nonetheless, it is interesting to compare these two offenders, and I wonder if an interview with Williams might not be able to shed more light on the type of person the EARONS is (or was). Thankfully, Williams was caught before he could take more victims, but the EARONS has evaded detection for decades, which brings me to the second common view I come across on these boards:
That the EARONS is somehow smarter, keener, and more capable than most offenders of this nature. After all, he has gotten away with at least 50 rapes, hundreds of ransackings, and about a dozen murders. He was able to target couples effectively, and only once did he lose control of a crime scene and almost get caught as a result (even then he was able to evade a pursuing FBI agent and other LEO's). He learned from his mistakes, from his past experiences, and his MO evolved to the point of near-perfection. Some people see this guy as being the ultimate serial killer - smarter and more capable than hundreds of LEO's who worked his case. Furthermore, he did not target the typical victims of serial killers; easy pickings in a throwaway society - the prostitutes, drug addicts, runaways, marginalized populations, and hitch hikers that offenders like Pickton, Ridgeway, the LI Ripper, the killer(s) responsible for the murders along BC's Highway of Tears, Wayne Williams, and even Jeffrey Dahmers were able to murder in large numbers before being caught. This offender is more like Ted Bundy - educated, bright, clever, bold, disturbingly normal on the outside, but a completely remorseless psychopath with tremendous underlying pathologies hidden just below the surface. He murders women from mainstream society, and is able to get away with it because he blends in so well to that same society.
Like Willams and Bundy, the EAR/ONS did not want to attack the typical "easy" prey of most serial killers. He was fixated on middle-class and upper-middle-class women and couples, and wanted to victimize them in the places they felt most at ease - their own homes. This alone tells us a lot about this offender. And it has led some people to see him as an almost mythical force of omnipotent evil, raping and killing without consequence before disappearing into the ether. However, a close read of the original news stories on the EAR from the Sacramento Bee and other papers show us an attacker who evolved with each offense, growing in confidence, perfecting his MO, and eventually avoiding the stupid mistakes he made early in his career that could have led him to be caught - for example, stealing a victim's car after one of the early attacks in East Sacramento. The EAR did not arrive on the scene having already perfected his trade. He was clumsy at first, made mistakes and probably could have been caught. Unfortunately, by the time LE realized that they had a dangerous serial offender on their hands and assembled a task force, the EAR had come close to perfecting his MO, and the fact that he was able to slip through so many dragnets and surveillance teams undetected leads to four disturbing possible conclusions (note that these are not mutually exclusive, and any combination of them might have been at work):
1) that this person is so normal in appearance that he is able to operate with virtual invisibility.
2) that this person has an excellent knowledge of law enforcement tactics and had some source in LE (maybe something as simple as a police scanner) that gave him the foresight to know where and when to attack to avoid detection.
3) that one or more LEO's really screwed up and let this person get away, and the mistake never came to light because LE would have been too embarrassed to admit it.
4) that this offender has some kind of connections that are allowing him to continue offending with impunity.
Was the EAR arrested in 1974? I believe so....
So now that I've sketched my own impressions of this offender, I want to get to the point of my post as stated in the thread title - in all likelihood, the EAR was caught in 1974, two years before the string of assaults that terrorized NorCal had begun. I'm sure that some board members have read the article where this fact is mentioned, but for those who haven't, here is the link: www.jjmcgr.org/BK/Clippings/20070112.pdf (apparently this link is broken. See my next post for a different link and instructions on how to find the article I am talking about).
If you notice, towards the very end of the article is an anecdote about a man who broke into a couple's home in Rancho Cordova, using the sliding glass door as his point of entry. However, the couple heard the man, phoned police, and the intruder was apprehended. On his person was found a knife, a gun, a mask, and several feet of pre-cut bindings (notice that every single detail about this offender, from the location, to his means of entry, to the items he brought with him all match the MO of the EAR/ONS). He was arrested, but nothing else about him is known because the file is missing. I feel 90% sure that this man went on to become the EAR/ONS, and somehow LE let him slip right through their fingers, and apparently never interviewed him as a suspect in the east area rapes. Something about this seems off to me.
Anyways, i wanted to introduce myself to the board with this post, and I hope that members will comment on the 1974 incident and their theories on how and why this perp got away. Perhaps this has already been discussed at length in another thread. If so, I apologize for repeating something that has already been discussed and analyzed. Still, I would love to hear from other members regarding my views on the offender, and especially this evidence that he was actually apprehended by LE TWO YEARS BEFORE the east area rapes began! As I mentioned, I am NOT an expert in this case, but am certainly among those who want answers.
Peace,
