There is nothing to sue for in civil court. Isn't that convenient? There could be no plea until the (sudden) divorce safely secured all joint assets. Dirty business all around. The cowards assets can now never be touched thanks to his divorce lawyer (& suddenly ex) wife.

I might be wrong Otis but I heard that she actually worked with LE.  That could be wrong but I have heard nothing official either way outside of Paul Holes putting that out there fairly quickly after the arrest.  Time goes by and things change.  I have only heard from other people that seem to have connections to the case so I sort of believe them.

Otis, IIRC, the house was in a trust JJD and SH formed in 1993. Technically this means the trust itself, not the individuals, owned the house.(Mortgage holder does not care whose name is on the trust, only the name on the mortgage itself).  Again, IIRC, the beneficiaries of the trust were the daughters. This means the house could never be sold for victim's compensation, attorney's fees, etc. and had already been secured for the daughters' inheritance. This is fairly common procedure for property in CA with its onerous taxes. I do believe the 'revocable' trust was altered slightly during the divorce (some trusts are 'irrevocable') so that the creator of the trust became SH alone instead of both of them. It is a complication property/inheritance/tax situation but many people in CA (including me) have their real estate in a trust to make things much, much easier upon one's demise (which is usually when the trust kicks in). I don't think there was anything nefarious about the creation of the trust in the first place. This is very common tax/estate/inheritance planning in CA. Also prevents anyone from contesting your will or the will going into probate. A trust and your will go hand in hand. 

Still wondering if those gold bars could be used for compensation, however.

James Huddle characterized the gold as something that could purchase a house. No doubt they're long gone - used for a huge expense, like 3 college & post grad tuitions. 

As for the trust - excellent explanation thank you. I always found the fact that  the trust was established in 1993 part of the curious circumstances of the DeAngelo's questionable legal arrangement. I definitely diverge from you in that I have no doubt it was nefarious. That's just my opinion.

There was always the possibility of survivors attacking the trust in civil court, thus tying up the assets for years, possibly a decade or more. But I could be wrong, it would hardly be the first time. However I firmly believe that was the motivation for the (sudden) divorce and the delay in accepting a plea. It was a risk a long time lawyer, perhaps a long time divorce lawyer, was not willing to chance.

Long time, no see! I am so glad you are back!

Let me tell you why I still believe he has plenty of money in the bank. JJD is a highly methodical, compulsive, exacting planner. In my informal observations in life, I have never known any individual who exhibits those same character traits who does not have a portfolio that would make Bill Gates salivate and swoon. Or, if they do not, they have at least some cash stowed away, not just for a rainy day, but for an extreme downpour. Of course, there are always exceptions here, but JJD is an extremely compulsive offender.

Secondly, I am Swiss and German -- I am sure someone as bright as you, Otis, knows where I am headed with this -- and, whenever I visit my homeland, there is always a lot of foreigners who joke about coming to Switzerland to withdraw some money from their Swiss bank account. They are just joking, of course, and I seriously doubt they have a bank account in Switzerland.

But, JJD? I would not doubt it for a second! He probably, right at this moment, is planning and plotting some great escape plan in that old, seriously twisted, escapist mind of his.

I, like you, am seriously disappointed upon learning of how the money that we are aware of, is so tightly wound up, and seriously out of his hands and most unfortunately, into the hands of others.

I still have some hope, though, that a forensic accounting will be undertaken, and hopefully sooner than later.

Otis, I hadn't thought about the college and grad school tuition but that's a great thought. Or perhaps the gold went to one of the other properties they bought. I have no idea how one would go about changing the gold into cash. Melting down into smaller chunks in exchange for cash? How many times and in how many different places could one do this without raising suspicion? We're not in Alaska panning for gold (LOL) where miners bring in found nuggets, after all.

I wasn't surprised the Rodney Miller case was absent. I always emphasized there were going to be subtractions as well as additions. Before this case was solved I thought EAR was responsible for the Miller event. But once DeAngelo was identified it seemed increasingly doubtful. The Maggiore case was rock solid landslide compared to anything they had from the Miller case. I am not a believer that DeAngelo was running around with long haired wigs and ones that were so good they looked natural. Bottom line the vast majority of composites simply were not him, including the one sourced from Rodney Miller and others in the vicinity that night.

Thanks Red, great to see you too. I've been kinda busy the last couple of months. Most got to stay home and shelter in place, but I got to do extended and double shifts without let up. No complaints and I'm certainly no hero, it's what I signed up for; it's my job!

Plus, my avatar is a cafe and cafes were closed around her till just recently so how could I possibly open up to post? hahaha Great to see you too!

It's been said by the brother in-law that this murderous pedophile was also a cheapskate. So I'm sure he and his (now suddenly ex) wife do have money hidden from potential law suites and they probably began legally (and otherwise) protecting their joint assets around the same time the house went into trust ... which was shortly after she moved out but NEVER divorced him (until he was caught).

Hmmm. Wonder why the move-out, quickly followed by protecting assets happened? Yet no divorce (until he was caught)?

JJD is a textbook case of an organized serial killer.  They all take every possible precaution to avoid detection and apprehension. They never show remorse. The are narcissistic. When they get caught and convicted, and know it’s over for them, most of them talk... because they want to brag.  They have no reason left to hold back, so they brag about their clever, devious, and in their minds brilliant, crimes.  And all the while,  still believing they’re smarter than the cops since it took so long for the cops to catch them.
