The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that an identification has been made in a case originating from the South Lake Tahoe area back in 1971.
In 1971, Donna Lass was reported as a missing person from The South Lake Tahoe Police Department. The investigative leads surrounding the disappearance of Lass were exhausted and the case remained unsolved.
In 1986, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office located an unidentified skull off of Hwy 20 near Interstate 80. There was no additional evidence located at the time, so the skull was preserved at our coroner’s office pending further advancements in forensic technology. The case was classified as an unidentified Jane Doe investigation.
Recently, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, started a cold case team and dedicated additional resources to assist in the investigation of unsolved missing persons and suspicious death cases. This team, along with our Crimes Against Persons unit, recently sent the skull off to the California Department of Justice in an attempt to utilize DNA technology to identify it. The California Department of Justice Bureau of Forensic Services was able to match the DNA of the skull with the DNA from a member of Donna Lass’s family which was obtained by South Lake Tahoe Police Department for their missing persons case. This allowed them to identify the skull as the remains of Donna Lass.
Last week, South Lake Tahoe PD was able to notify Donna Lass’ surviving family members that she had been located. We are extremely grateful that this team effort was able to bring closure to the Lass family and are hopeful that cold case detectives can continue to make advances in these cases. South Lake Tahoe PD will be continuing to look into any future leads on this case. Location tends to indicate someone who has ties to the I80 corridor.  Most people who travel between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe use Highway 50.  Going around Lake Tahoe adds an hour of travel time.  If someone local to South Lake Tahoe was going to dump a body, there are so many places closer to the casinos that are very remote.  No need to drive to I80 and Highway 20.

You mean like Joe Deangelo? I believe his mother and stepfather lived in Auburn at this time of Donna’s abduction. Joe may have lived with them at the time while he was attending Sierra College in Rocklin. Both locations are right off the I-80. Looks like about 40 miles west of where they found Donna. Also there is a lake called the Lake of the Pines near Auburn. I am not saying Joe is the Zodiac, but it is kind of interesting.

I don't think it could have been Gallego.  I believe he was in jail/prison  in September of 1970.  He was arrested 10/25/1969 with his half brother for an armed robbery in Vacaville and was convicted and sentenced to five years in state prison.

Yes that could definitely be the case. I do recall he was confined for a period before 1971 at least once. Unfortunately they let him out!

Yes, the resemblance is striking, and we all know Joe chose his victims, it was never random. From what I can tell, Bonnie broke off the engagement sometime in 1971 which is way after Donna’s abduction. I just wish Deangelo would talk from prison, but I don’t think he will.

I think JJD is clearly the Zodiac. The only question is how many crimes associated with Zodiac were actually Zodiac. I think it might be complicated, given JJD's tendency for red herrings, which we also see with Z crimes.

Agree, with the exception that I think sometimes Joe's crimes were more opportunistic. But he no doubt held grudges and acted on them. Look at Victor Hayes as one example. Also, I believe the day after Bonnie broke up with JJD, there was an unsolved arson on Calwell street. Or some name almost identical to Bonnie's last name. Look at the Daniel Williams case. Home invasion with calls to taunt. And breaking in with such boldness. JJD loved to poison animals. He killed by Proxie. You can clearly see he associates his crimes with revenge. "Bonnie, I hate you" during the middle of a rape. Look at all the matching names. I'm in the camp that believes he could very well be Sandy in 1963. People before me have pointed out all the matching names. See below from a previous poster. In addition to these, there seem to be a lot of Kathleens. Also, 12-26-75 used to have all the critical dates in his life lined up with Zodiac dates. Zodiac letters sent on JJD's birthday, his mother's birthday and his stepfather's birthday. The list goes on and on. It's not coincidence. JJD is Z. Plain as day. Descriptions match perfectly. The timelines line up exactly. I'm very interested to know why 12-26-75 suddenly removed all the JJD and Z information so abruptly.

I don't know. Maybe a year ago. Give or take. They had side by side comparison's of Z's handwriting next to JJD's. Timeline info. All of it. I haven't heard one thing that rules JJD out as being Z, and troves of indications that they are one in the same. Something really weird is going on with the lack of information on Z and also JJD crimes outside of what he was convicted for. Common sense demonstrates he was an active criminal in multiple ways his entire life.

Wow, that is a lot of great information. There are a lot more similarities as well. I just haven’t been paying  much attention to this case until Donna was found. I would think that the 12-26-75 site took that information down since they considered it a distraction, as the main purpose of the site is to exonerate Clifton.

i did just watch the 2nd part of the Tony Reid and John Vaughn presentation. At the end Reid states that on the morning DeAngelo was arrested LE interrogated him for 7 hours and they had to stop it since he was confessing to many other crimes. Apparently he wouldn’t stop talking. When will the public have access to that interrogation? It would answer so many questions. He also states that Deangelo refuses to talk to the press or any attorneys.

David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen were murdered on Lake Herman rd very near Lake Herman.
Back in 1968 the turnout was much larger in area and had a double-gated entrance, locked at its center point to guard access to the Benicia Water Pumping Station.

Bryan Hartnell & Cecelia Shepard were attacked at Lake Berryessa.
There is a small power station on this lake near "Devils Gate" at Putah Creek.

Donna Lass disappeared from Lake Tahoe and her skull was found near Lake Spaulding & PG&E Spaulding 1 Powerhouse.

Would I be reading too much into the various coincidence's of attacks very near a lake or that a "water pumping station or power station" are close to (2-3) of these attack/murder sites or where Donna Lass remains were found?  Zodiac uses "Radians" on the Mt. Diablo map, would an engineer who might work at one of these pump/power stations be familiar with "radians"?  He would definately be using maps in his line of work.  I've always suspected that with his knowledge of radians, ciphers or bomb making, that the Zodiac was somewhat well educated and possibly an engineer.  Maybe the location of Donna's remains will shed new light on the killer?
